Music review for 'Annanuku Jey' songs

Music review for 'Annanuku Jey' songs

Annanukku Jai is a brave, experimental and extremely variant soundtrack from composer Arrol Corelli. Every song drives itself in a different genre bringing in something for everybody. Its the first time the 'Pisaasu' composer gets to work on a mainstream commercial album and definitely shows a lot of promise and his adaptability to commercial needs.

En Peru Matta:
Singers - Emcee Jesz, Stevie and Chorus
Lyrics - Emcee Jesz, Rajkumar
The opener is a stunning death-metal with heavy guitars, drums, bass and an insane rendition by the singers Emcee Jesz, Stevie and Chorus. The handling of  complicated tripling from "Pottu varuven raja nadai" is an example of how the composer has equipped himself to handle a complex musicality and present it neat and simple. There are a lot of enjoyable parts in the song such as "Mersal Illai" and "Annanukku Jey" in the song. We can make out that "Matta Sekar" is beginning to rise in politics with this song in the background.

Maane Thene:
Singers - Velmurugan, Lakshmi Pradeep
Lyrics - Rajkumar
From a different direction all together, an accessible rhythm and groove with a romantic melodic rendition by Velmuurgan and Lakshmi Pradeep with a very interesting brass and horns arrangement set right into some funky lyrics like "Karumaari kovilula nee ninnu paakkayila", "Ponds powder kekkuthadi adiye" makes us groove instantly with this typical tamil folk tune. Arrol Corelli's ability to produce "radio friendly" tunes for mainstream trends are evident on this track.

Mayakkuraane
Singers - Andreah Jeremiah
Lyrics - Rajkumar
Its a rarely experimented jazzy love song now with Andreah's vocals being the icing on the cake. This pleasing melody predominantly set to carnatic raga Keeravani is arranged with an extravagant brass section, clarinet, piano fills and some seductive drumming which make this song a very interesting one. Special mention to the freestyle piano, clarinet and trumpet fills arrangement by the composer.

Anjaa Nenjane
Singers - Anthony Daasan, Sammie Kootaliz
Lyrics - Rajkumar
Again an amazing experiment with Rap, Jazz and Kuthu. Set in a very interesting and so full-of-life sequence, this song is a garland of words like "Anjaa Nenjane", "Arivin Arive" used on banners to praise (political) leaders by their followers. Sammie Kootaliz and Anthony Daasan are on the opposite sides of the see-saw with respect to their voices making the flow of the song too cool.

Thaaru Maara
Singer - Deva
Lyrics - Rajkumar
A sophisticated gana song with some sufi touch by Arrol Corelli rendered by the veteran "Thenisai Thendral" Deva himself propelling it by his signature rendition. Further enriched by the composer's backing accordions, guitars and bass, this song is an attractive number with Rajkumar's mischievous lyrics and very interesting chorus parts in the interludes.

Satti Melam Gana
Singer and Lyrics - Gana Bala
A typical death song packed with lyrics that celebrates the demise of a local politician composed by Gana Bala and produced by Arrol Corelli. This song sets the satirical mood of the film with two political parties fighting to claim the demise of the local politician as theirs, thereby trying to claim some sympathy votes.

Mersal Illai
Singer - Kids Chorus
Lyrics - Rajkumar
A massy dubstep mix by Arrol Corelli with some tamil flavours like the tapes and shouts that seems to happen at a very important sequence in the film. This comic and thematic song sung by Kids chorus will be appreciated more with the film.

Theme of Annanukku Jai
The Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra
This grandiose, rewarding, orchestral theme is the musical soul of the film, in typical Arrol Corelli's signature sound. This gradually evolving theme escalates slowly with a dark and intense background with the low strings, mightily taken over by the trumpet and horns, thereby setting the mood for the life, heart and soul of the people of the locale, the leaders, the followers and their families involved in the politics that the film speaks
