Third i has been inaugurated today by Padma Bhushan Sri Kris Gopalakrishnan


“Third i" has been inaugurated by Padma Bhushan Sri Kris Gopalakrishnan, Co-founder & Former Executive Vice-President, Infosys and current Chairman, Axilor Ventures in the presence of Dr.Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.


“Third i" will house 4 big labs, each lab with 132 numbers of high-end All-In-One computers (totally 528 high-end computer systems), a conference hall, two seminar halls, a meeting room, a server room, UPS room, maintenance rooms, staff rooms, etc. These labs will be open 24 x 7 and would be used by B.Tech., M.Tech. students, M.S., and PhD research scholars for their regular laboratory classes, to supplement 
the classroom lectures, and to carry out their projects, and to develop their professional skills.


"Third i" would evoke several positive moods and vibrations about knowledge (in Sanskrit "gnana netram") and next generation's "i" deas, "i"intelligence, "i" information, “i” internet and so on.Internet Access

NIT-T is connected to the Internet via 2.5 Gbps fiber connectivity. Of this 1 Gbps is provided by National Informatics Centre (NIC) using Railnet as a part of National Knowledge Network (NKN), another 1 Gbps 
is provided by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) as a part of National Mission on Education through Information & Communication Technology (NME-ICT) and 512 Mbps (1:1) leased line is provided by Software Technology Park of India (STPi). Network security is provided through UTM appliance and Email Security appliances.

Currently, Wi-Fi facility is available at all the 27 Student Hostels using 600 Wireless Access Points (WAP) to enable students to access the Internet and Intranet from their laptops. Apart from this Wi-Fi is available at Guest House, T&P, Library, Admin block, Deans Block, Dean Academic Office, Lecture Hall Complex, LYCEUM, OJAS, IT Center, Hostel Office, Shopping Complex, Hospital.

There are about 220 switches, located in 34 different buildings and 27 hostels. Network expansion still continues and work is on for making the campus Wi-Fi by deploying more number of Access Points.

Library & Printer Room The Computer Center Library has a collection of 5819 books & manuals, 
3639 Software CDs, & Journals, and 200 Project Reports.

The printer room is equipped with a Network High-Speed Laser Printer for and Students. An A3 High-Speed Mono Laser Printer and an A4 Mono Laser Printer have been installed.

A/C Units and UPSAll the laboratories are provided with centralized Air conditioning units. All the Computer systems and servers are connected with 180 KVA modular ups power backups which provide 24 x 7 hours of 
uninterruptible operation.

Computer Support Group (CSG)This computer centre is maintained by the Computer Support Group 
(CSG). The CSG consists of a professionally qualified and skilled team of Technical Officers, Hardware, CAD/CAM, Software, Network Engineers, Data Entry Operators, Computer Operators, ad-hoc System Trainees and onsite engineers. There are about 1700 concurrent systems, and on an average, every day about 25+ service calls are attended by the trainees. The activities inside the laboratories in the CSG are completely monitored security cameras.

In addition to the above, the CSG undertakes•Updating of the website on a daily basis, developing a portal for 
recruitment, etc•All the purchases of computers and related IT items for the entire Institute are made available through the rate contract arrived at by the CSG.

•For all the Lecture Hall during teaching activity, the CSG provides Audio and Video facility. Video conferences are also arranged for national level students’ symposia, Conferences, Workshops and other GoI /MHRD initiated meetings.

•Offer specialized training programmes to various organizations including BHEL, OFT, TNEB, HAPP, High Energy Batteries India Ltd., SBI, IOB, CB, SBT, PWD, Govt. School teachers and so on.

The OCTAGON – was the first Computer Center opened in 1990-91 is the sterling hallmark of this campus. This centre serves the campus-wide LAN to about 7500 users across the campus (using both wired and 
wireless networks). It has a 10 Gbps fibre optic backbone interconnecting the departments/buildings. It also acts as a resource centre to supplement classroom instructions with laboratory sessions. The Octagon has the central computing facilities, including a server room with 40+ high-end servers and 6 laboratories with totally 200 high-end computers. Also, the Octagon accommodates a Library, a Printer Room, and Centralized A/C Units. The LAN has been designed with a Full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet backbone offering an aggregate bandwidth of 10 Gbps between different Switches using Single-mode fibre.

The TwinNet was the second Computer Center opened in 2006 it has two labs each with 99 computer systems (with totally 198 computers). It is used exclusively by the students for their C, C++ Programming, and 
Engineering drawing courses.
