Pammal Sankara Group of Healthcare Institutions celebrated its Coral Jubilee of Health care and silver jubilee of eye care. Kanchi Kamakoti Jagatguru Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Sakaracharya swamigal inaugurated the event.
Vijayendra Swamival honoured eminent personalities, doctors, nurse, staff worked for the success of the Pammal Sankara Health Care Institutions.

Pammal Sankara Group of Healthcare Institutions consists of BP Jain Hospital, a multi-speciality 30-bed Hospital and three Sankara Eye Hospitals setup in Pammal, Nanganallur and Samarjhola in Odisha. This year marks the Coral Jubilee of the Group’s foray into Healthcare and Silver Jubilee of Eye care. This momentous occasion has a history that needs to be told
In 1983/84 Pammal was a sleepy suburb with no Schools or Healthcare facilities. On the directions of His Holiness, Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, a few like-minded people under the leadership of Dr V Venkatasubramanian, started a Primary School in the premises of a Satsangam building and a Outpatient clinic a year later in one of the rooms in the same building. These steps were to become the start of a great transformation process which would benefit millions of needy people in the years to come.
Many people played significant roles in this transformational journey but one person who acted as the enabler was Sri Appasamy Iyer who owned most of the real estate in Sri Sankara Nagar. He gave an acre of land for construction of a School and about half-an-acre for construction of a Hospital, the latter as a gift.
The School constructed on this land has now grown into one having nearly 3000 students and is adjudged one of the most sought after Institutions in South Chennai.
The Out-patient clinic known as the One Rupee Hospital, after the OP charge that was collected towards consultation and two days worth of medicines, became a 20-bed hospital when the new building was constructed in 1990 and increased the OP charge to Rs 10. In 1994, Rotary Club of Madras Fort with Rtn BP Jain as the President, came forward to support Eye care in the Hospital and in the same year, His Holiness Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal launched Project “Kannoli” – Vision Saver. The Project was meant to provide eye care to the needy poor through a Community Ophthalmology programme. By 1997, Eye care had expanded in scope and the general hospital functions were moved out to a temporary facility in Pammal and the Hospital became a full fledged eye Hospital.
A new building was constructed by 2001 for the General Hospital which was named as BP Jain Hospital after the principal donor. This Hospital served a much needed purpose in the area and was soon extending excellent services.
In the meanwhile, the eye Hospital continued to provide compassionate eye care to a large number of people from the rural areas of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Chittoor Districts. The services from Sankara Eye Hospital continued to increase with the addition of sub-specialities like Retina, Glaucoma, Cornea, Orbit and Oculoplasty and Paediatric Ophthalmology. The Hospital offers qualitative services, a fact endorsed by qualifying for Entry Level accreditation with NABH in 2017. In 2014, we added a branch Hospital in Nanganallur and in 2016 we opened a new multi-speciality Eye Hospital in Samarjhola, Odisha. Over the years, Sankara Eye Hospitals have screened more than 1.5 million outpatients and carried out over 2,85,000 vision restoration surgeries of which over 70% have been delivered free of cost.
BP Jain Hospital has grown into a prominent position in the area as a destination for qualitative eye care. It has also received Entry level accreditation with NABH in 2019. To date the Hospital has handled over 1.7 million outpatients.
All our Institution continue to provide qualitative compassionate care at very affordable costs and in many cases, completely free of cost for those who are in real need. The Group has helped transform Pammal through their services
