Unavailability of e-passes causes

Unavailability of e-passes causes disruption in milk delivery for consumers*

With intense lockdown in Chennai in force till 30th June 2020 and with the Chennai Police tightning restrictions during the complete lockdown, Major Private Dairies like Thirumala, Heritage, Dodla and Jersey have been struggling to ensure smooth distribution of milk in the city for consumers as the police have been refusing to allow movement of milk delivery personnel without a valid e-pass.

Considering the fact that Dairy Company personnel have to travel from different parts of the City to ensure timely delivery of milk, e-pass becomes mandatory. However, the response on applications for e-passes of two wheelers was only received after six days and it has been rejected today citing the reason that “Company is responsible to provide transportation arrangements for its employees. Request for two wheelers cannot be considered”. Hence the private dairy players are facing difficulty in ensuring timely supply of milk in the City. Therefore the major dairy players have represented to the Government of Tamil Nadu to either approve e-pass applications on priority basis for two wheelers as well, or to permit dairy company employees to operate with valid Company ID and authorisation letter in lieu of e-passes to ensure smooth supply of essential commodities. Further the Private Dairy players request the State Government to pass necessary instructions to the respective departments to allow movement of people to ensure continuity of milk supply during these difficult times. Repeated requests have been submitted but with no response till date from the Milk teams, e-pass team and police.
