NIT Tiruchirappalli has been awarded 2 fellowships in the Prime Minister’s Research Fellows (PMRF) Scheme designed for improving the quality of research in higher educational institutions in the country
23 Oct 2020: NIT Tiruchirappalli has been awarded 2 fellowships in the Prime Minister’s Research Fellows (PMRF) Scheme designed for improving the quality of research in higher educational institutions in the country. The scheme was announced in the Budget 2018-19. The scheme
was open to IITs, IISc and IISERs. However, this year, NITs and Central Universities which are in 25 institutes in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking (overall) in the
previous year have been included. National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli being the only NIT in the top 25 Institutions, has been included in the PMRF awarding Institutions along with 6 Central
Universities.
Shortlisted applications of 15 scholars who were admitted in the year 2019-2019 were sent for consideration under the PMRF scheme out of which 2 students were awarded the fellowships.
The fellowships are awarded to Mr.Sundaramahalingam of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Ms. Merlin Mary N J of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Mr. M.A.Sundaramahalingam, completed his post-graduation degree (M.Tech - Biotechnology), after his Graduation (B.Tech - Biotechnology) and currently pursuing his doctorate degree in
Department of Chemical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu, under the Guidance of Dr.P.Sivashanmugam,Professor (HAG),Dept of Chemical Engg. He submitted
the proposal in the treatment of Food Industry wastes, along with the Bioprospecting of its valuable product. This works on the strategy of combined Bioremediation and Bioprospecting under the theme; “Waste to wealth and zero waste technology”, a current scenario of treatment plant in industries.
Ms. Merlin Mary N J is a Ph.D. student of EEE department at NIT, Trichy. She is working under the guidance of Dr. Shelas Sathyan,Asst Professor,Dept of EEE and her research is focussed on the development of high efficient on-board battery chargers for electric vehicles (both wired and wireless). Electric vehicles can reduce environmental pollution. EV battery chargers should have fast charging capability and less impact on the utility grid. Deliverables of this project will be developing a hardware prototypes of compact and high efficient utility friendly EV charger, technology transfer through high-quality publications to Indian industries and academia, and also to file
product patents based on the research.
According to this scheme the scholar is eligible to get a fellowship of Rs.70,000/- per month for the first two years, Rs.75,000/- per month for the 3rd year, and Rs.80,000/- per month in the 4th and 5th
year. Apart from this, a research grant of Rs.2.00 lakh per year will be provided to each of the Fellows for a period of 5 years to cover their academic contingency expenses and for foreign/national travel
expenses.
Director Dr Mini Shaji Thomas congratulated the Departments, Heads of the departments and the research supervisors for the accomplishment. She also mentioned that the PMRF fellows will strive to reach their research to the society as well. She complimented the research supervisors Dr P Sivashanmugam and Dr Shelas Sathyan of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering respectively.
