SICVETian’s Celebrate their 40th
Anniversary at NIT Trichy
National
Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the
batch of 1980 of State Institute of Co-operative Vocational Education and
Training (SICVET) on 25th January 2020. The programme offered at REC-Trichy
functioned for three courses and admitted students for three and a half years.
The courses offered were Diploma in Architecture and Interior Design, Diploma
in Electrical Appliances and Systems, and Diploma in Textiles and Fashion
Design.
This course was modelled to
intersperse academic education with relevant industry experience and resulted
in each student to be seamlessly absorbed into their respective industries upon
graduation. These courses were offered
over three years, starting in 1975 and was discontinued in the year 1980.
The
event was inaugurated by Director, Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, in the presence of
Dr. Raman Sankaranarayan, Dean Institute Development and Alumni Relations, Mr.
Krishna Sai, President of RECAL; Professor Shanmugam, Faculty of SICVET, Mr.
Senthilnathan (batch of '80) Managing Director of Thangavelu Textile Mills and
Mr. Balakrishnan (batch of '80), President of SICVET Alumni Association. Each of the dignitaries spoke during the
occasion. A moment of silence was
observed for the beloved souls are not with us anymore, including Professor
Jacob and Professor Manisundaram, both of whom were the masterminds behind the
SICVET program.
Professor
Shanmugam delivered his heartfelt address to the 74 students that he taught and
guided with great affection and care. He compared SICVET to a gurukulam and
credited the human-touch of the course as a reason for its success in shaping
these individuals. He ended his speech by crediting the SICVET alumni for
providing employment to several people.
Dr.
Raman Sankaranarayan welcomed the group to the campus and appreciated the
enthusiasm of the SICVETians. He
commended the program for its rigorous training that SICVET students have gone
through, that has shaped them into well-rounded individuals. He humbly
requested the SICVETians to interact with the current students of NITT, and
support them through any means possible.
The
Director, Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas delivered her Directorial address, welcoming
the SICVET Alumni to the campus. She compared the presence of the SICVET Alumni
to the biblical story of the returning of the prodigal son. She expressed
immense delight in being able to welcome the alumni and spoke about the
initiatives being taken to raise NITT to greater heights.
The
programme ended with a small video felicitating the departed souls and a small
presentation of the syllabus that was conceptualized during those days, paving
a way to new avenues.
