In an unprecedented convergence of culture, cinema, and technology, the Producers of Ilaiyaraaja sir’s biopic, Connekkt Media and Mercuri Movies have teamed up with WPP Production to produce a first-of-its-kind cinematic tribute marking the 50th anniversary of legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja's debut in Indian cinema.

On May 14, 1976, the release of Annakili introduced the world to a music that would redefine the very soul of Indian cinema. Fifty years on, Ilaiyaraaja's compositions spanning over 1,500 films and more than 9,000 songs across 09 languages remain among the most emotionally resonant and culturally enduring in the history of world cinema. This anniversary is not merely a milestone. It is a reckoning with the scale of one man's gift to humanity.

"Ilaiyaraaja sir's music is not just a soundtrack, it is the emotional memory of generations across the world," said Varun Mathur, Founder of Connekkt Media. "As he completes 50 extraordinary years in cinema, we wanted to create something that redefines content and is at power with the best in the world, just like his music has done film after film. This collaboration represents the very best of what happens when world-class creative and technological minds come together in service of something timeless.

The tribute is a visually and emotionally immersive cinematic asset, built using industry-leading AI technology and next-generation filmmaking workflows. Drawing on emotion, cinematic storytelling, and visual innovation, it distils five decades of Ilaiyaraaja's influence into a singular modern experience, one that speaks as powerfully to audiences today as his music has to every generation before them.

"Ilaiyaraaja's legacy is not simply that of a Composer,  it is an emotion that has lived in the hearts of millions for half a century," said Sriram Bakthisaran, MD & Group CEO of  Mercuri Group. "To bring the tools of tomorrow to bear in celebrating that legacy is both a privilege and a responsibility we do not take lightly." AI has democratised access to technology, and we believe this collaboration will provide an industry interest in AI tools that we will deploy, which will bring down production costs drastically without displacing creative talent.

WPP Production, bringing its creative and AI expertise to the initiative, sees the work as emblematic of a broader shift in how culture and technology can serve each other. "The most enduring creative work sits at the intersection of emotion, culture, and innovation," said Karthik Nagarajan, CEO of WPP Production. "This tribute is precisely that, a project where the most advanced AI-driven creative capabilities are deployed not in pursuit of spectacle, but in honour of something genuinely timeless - Raja sir’s music, which has been the soundtrack of multiple generations in South India, including ours.
