Kris Srinaath Presents ‘CUSTOMER’ – A Thought-Provoking Take on Advertising, Consumer Psychology and the Creation of Desire

How much influence can a simple advertisement have on an ordinary person’s life? Can repeated messaging turn an insecurity into a need — and eventually turn a person into a “customer”?

Exploring this compelling idea is ‘CUSTOMER’, a thought-provoking film presented and produced by Kris Srinaath under the banner of Vishnu Talkies. Written and directed by D Vignesh Kumar, the film stars Pavithra Janani, Arun, Sridhar Chandra and Krishnan in prominent roles.

The film revolves around Devi, an ordinary middle-class woman leading a simple life with her husband and son. Occupied with work and everyday family responsibilities, Devi has never paid much attention to her appearance.

However, things begin to change when she is repeatedly exposed to advertisements for a hair-growth oil. What initially appears to be just another advertisement gradually makes her conscious of something she had never considered a serious flaw.

The comments of people around her, society’s perception of appearance and, most importantly, the expectations of her son slowly begin to influence Devi. What was once insignificant starts becoming an insecurity, eventually creating in her mind the feeling that she needs the advertised product.

But when Devi considers buying the oil, she is not merely purchasing a product. She is responding to a need that has been carefully created in her mind by marketing.

At the other end of this equation is Vignesh, a marketer who understands that selling is not merely about promoting a product. He observes people’s desires, fears, aspirations and insecurities and understands how these emotions can be converted into consumer behaviour.

For him, every individual is ultimately a “Customer.”

Whether Devi finally chooses to buy the product or breaks away from the influence created around her forms the crux of ‘CUSTOMER’.

With the striking tagline “You Don’t Buy a Product, Product Buys You,” the film attempts to raise questions about modern advertising, consumer psychology and the subtle ways in which marketing can influence our choices and even shape the way we perceive ourselves.
