Chennai: Millennials grew up with Yuvan Shankar Raja. Gen Z discovered him differently.

Almost three decades into his career, Yuvan’s music continues to move across generations. Songs and scores that became part of one generation’s memories are now being discovered, shared and made their own by another.

On September 19, Walking Through the Rainbow brought those worlds into the same room, placing Yuvan’s background scores, cinematic themes, motifs and unreleased compositions at the centre of a full symphonic concert.

There has always been a quiet rebellion to Yuvan.

Born into the extraordinary musical legacy of Ilaiyaraaja, he chose to build a language distinctly his own. Electronic textures, hip hop, R&B, unconventional voices and genre crossing sounds became part of a career driven by experimentation rather than formula.

And often, Yuvan was ahead of the curve.

From helping usher in Tamil cinema’s remix culture to releasing BGMs and original scores as music audiences could experience beyond the film, Yuvan consistently pushed at the boundaries of how film music was created, released and consumed.

Walking Through the Rainbow takes that instinct to its next stage.

This time, the background score moved from behind the screen to centre stage, becoming the heart of an entire symphonic experience.

One arena. Two generations.

Inside the arena, some scores brought audiences to a standstill, visibly moved to tears. Others sent thousands into a frenzy from the opening notes.

The energy quickly moved beyond the venue, with social media filling with reels, reactions and moments from the night.

What millennials remember, Gen Z is rediscovering.

Nearly three decades on, Yuvan’s music is not simply being remembered. It is still being discovered.

Built across borders

Yuvan’s scores were rehearsed and performed by the Bangkok 28 Orchestra, bringing a full symphonic dimension to his cinematic music. The Indian Choral Ensemble, alongside Yuvan’s band and technicians from India, completed the live ensemble.

Walking Through the Rainbow was produced by Luners Talent Management, in association with Noise & Grains, bringing together music, sound, stage, lighting, technology and visual storytelling.

Creative ideas and contributions also came from Zafroon Nizar and Abisheik Ranganathan from Yuvan’s team, working alongside the wider creative and production teams to shape the world around his music.

“Yuvan Sir’s vision was to let audiences experience his music differently. Everything we created had one purpose, to take them deeper into that world,” said Show Director Karthik Srinivas.

“This is only the beginning. The format can keep evolving with more scores, more chapters and larger experiences,” said Production Director Mahaveer.

Yuvan opens a new lane

The significance of Walking Through the Rainbow goes beyond one concert.

By building a standalone symphonic property around cinematic scores, Yuvan is creating a new space for Indian film music on the live stage, with the potential to connect with audiences across cities and cultures.

The music was born in Tamil cinema. The stage is global.

For Walking Through the Rainbow, Chennai was chapter one.

And this story has only just begun.
