‘The Valley of Health’ Chronicles a Community’s Remarkable Healthcare Revolution in Sittilingi

Some films expand our understanding of the world simply by showing us a reality we may never have encountered. “The Valley of Health”, directed by filmmaker and writer Sankara Narayanan, is one such film. Set in the remote forest valley of Sittilingi in Tamil Nadu, the documentary traces an extraordinary transformation in healthcare and community life. The film is an official selection at the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), 2026.

Set in Sittilingi, a remote forest valley in Tamil Nadu, the film looks back at the healthcare crisis faced by the tribal community in the 1990s and the transformation that followed when two doctors moved to the valley and founded the Tribal Health Initiative (THI) in 1993. What began as a modest healthcare initiative gradually evolved into a community-led system serving more than 25 villages and bringing lasting change to generations of residents.

For director Sankara Narayanan, the film is also an opportunity to draw attention to realities within the tribal sector that often remain outside the public gaze. Through “The Valley of Health”, he turns his focus towards a community whose experience offers a larger perspective on healthcare, dignity, participation and sustainable change.

Speaking about the film, Sankara Narayanan says, “I have always been inclined to highlight the challenges faced by the tribal communities.  I have always felt that the world should see the inadequate medical facilities and the difficulties tribals go through in accessing medical help. At a time when healthcare is being increasingly commodified, a story of a valley that took matters on their own hands offers a much needed counter narrative. The film speaks of universal problem and it shows not just what is broken but also a possible solution. This was one of the key motivations behind taking up this project.

I am deeply grateful to my wife and my family for standing by me and supporting me throughout this journey. The congratulatory messages that have been pouring in from people who have seen the film have been extremely encouraging. At the same time, they make me feel that my responsibility is now bigger and my commitment to bringing such stories to the world is even firmer.”

At its heart, The Valley of Health is not merely a film about a healthcare initiative. It is about what becomes possible when a community is trusted to participate in changing its own circumstances. Sittilingi’s journey carries a simple but powerful idea: sometimes the most meaningful revolutions begin quietly, with people choosing to care for one another.
