Robot Friends” and VR for Loneliness

“Robot Friends” and VR for Loneliness During the Pandemic

The isolation that individuals have endured due to the COVID-19 pandemic includes feelings of loneliness and depression. And in order to help those experiencing these types of feelings, technologists, researchers, and healthcare workers are tapping into the benefits of using “robot friends” and VR for loneliness.

Depression increased after the outbreak of the virus and sharp mental health shifts occurred as COVID-19 cases began to rise around the globe. A study by GOQii, a smart-tech-enabled preventive healthcare platform, surveyed over 10,000 Indians, to understand how they have been coping with the new normal. It revealed that stress levels have been on a rapid rise in India, with 43% of Indians suffering from depression – 26% of respondents were suffering from mild depression, 11% were feeling moderately depressed, whereas 6% of the respondents were facing severe symptoms of depression.

IEEE member Jonathan Gratch says that physical touch and the way people give social cues in-person versus through a video call is biologically beneficial for our brains. Without those forms of social interaction happening regularly, our loneliness meter increases.

“Video conferencing can be cognitively demanding, as it might supercharge some of the social stressors found in real-world interactions,” says Gratch. “The fact that you see yourself makes you more aware of your appearance and reactions and increases your ‘impression management’. This is a known stressor.”

Another difficulty with video conferencing is our perception of screen boundaries. “For analog face-to-face, physically co-located interactions, our senses are not bounded by a screen border or controlled and mediated by a single camera angle or microphone placement,” says IEEE member Todd Richmond. “When we are in person, we are immersed in a space and that sense of immersion is something humans have learned and evolved to expect.”

Since we weren’t able to obtain the social interactions our bodies and brains were expecting or desiring during the COVID-19 crisis because of public safety concerns, robotics, and virtual reality (VR) stepped in to fill the loneliness gaps.

ROBOT FRIENDS USE AI TO KEEP US SOCIALLY UPDATED

Social robots, or robotic friends, have provided an alternative for social interaction when human connection is limited.

Robots are being used in a variety of ways, as reported by IEEE Spectrum –– from Fribo, a robot that informs your friends and family members what you’re doing in your house, so they know you’re actively moving, to these robots that are meant to be broken and yelled at in order to get out your negative emotions –– are ultimately helping you feel less alone.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are often used in these health-managing robots to improve their interactions with you.

AI VOICE ASSISTANTS FOR OLDER ADULTS

A recent article mentioned a study that used AI voice assistants that were “programmed to report sensor-based health information using visual and voice interfaces” for older adults living at home.

“Aging in your home is no longer a luxury for those most at-risk of transmitted viruses,” says IEEE Senior Member Marjorie Skubic, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Missouri where the study was conducted. “Artificial intelligence is key to addressing this challenge by giving older adults better tools for managing their own health,” the article stated.

“To develop more innovative solutions that help keep people safe and make the world a better place, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society recommends that all organizations actively combating COVID-19 leverage AI, one of the most powerful tools at our disposal,” states the article.

VR FOR LONELINESS HELPS OUR BRAINS FEEL CONNECTED

Virtual Reality is another technology being used to help people currently going through isolation.

“Compared to video conferencing, VR tech is known to increase both physical and social presence,” says Gratch. “You feel like you are really at a place or really with a person. In terms of social interaction, it can help deal with some of the breakdowns in social cues.”

“VR brings a higher degree of immersion than a typical screen-based interaction,” adds Richmond. “Sharing a virtual space with someone in an immersive VR experience could very well lead to a better sense of “being there”. The shared space is key, and one problem with current video solutions.”

If VR is more beneficial than video conferencing, why aren’t we taking all of our work meetings and conducting all of our family gatherings in this way while we stay home? Richmond explains that this limitation is mostly because the devices are not as accessible as a computer or tablet.

“Most everyone has a screen (be it phone or computer), but very few have AR/VR,” says Richmond. “Once AR/VR gets more ubiquitous, more people will be able to experiment with the experiences, which will help advance the technology development and create new sets of social norms that will be necessary.”

Both Richmond and Gratch feel optimistic about the advancements happening in the virtual reality space. The pandemic has forced us all to adapt and make this type of technology a higher priority than ever before.

OTHER TECHNOLOGIES BEING USED FOR LONELINESS

Wearables, sensors and IoT are other methods being explored during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, our desire for contact has moved technology forward to offer more effective solutions than ever before. While nothing can beat a hug from another person, robots and VR are making that absence feel a little less large.

“The pandemic has shown us that humans value contact, and that contact needs to move beyond the traditional screen boundary,” says Richmond.

Bengaluru hotel sector performance declined

Bengaluru hotel sector performance declined 59% in RevPAR in YTD
July 2020 (y-o-y): JLL report

  • Occupancy down 53 % YTD July (y-o-y)
  • INR 700 Crore (USD 93 million) expected transaction pipeline estimated for
  • 4.8 million international passenger arrivals in 2019, up 13% y-o-y
  • Total number of branded keys at the end of 2019 stood at 14,987, up 4 % y-o-y

Bengaluru has seen the sharpest decline in Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) among major Indian cities due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. According to JLL’s India Hotel Recovery Guide- Bengaluru, released today, as of YTD July 2020, RevPAR declined by 59% but is expected to bottom out in Q4 2020 as the Government gradually eases lockdown restrictions and domestic travel begins to pick up.

Gradual reopening of the country and easing of travel restrictions is expected to lead to a measured increase in business travel in major commercial markets. Bangalore is likely to get a bit of business-critical demand. Destinations within driving distance, in and around Bengaluru, including golf course and Ayurvedic centres, are also likely to see an increase in demand.

The city was amongst the first key markets to relax lockdown and opened considerably in early July, with only Sundays designated as days of lockdown. However, with an increase in COVID-19 cases in the weeks that followed, a 9-day lockdown from 14 to 22 July was imposed. Though, from August onwards, night curfews and Sunday lockdowns have been lifted.

The hotel transaction market in India in 2019 was very buoyant, with total deal volume reaching a record INR 5,327.5 crore (USD 762 Million)This included the acquisition of four operational Leela Palace Hotels, a land parcel in Agra, and the “Leela” Brand by Brookfield. These represented the largest proportion of the total transaction volume in 2019 and was also the highest hotel portfolio transaction value in India to date.
“Over the last few years, Bengaluru has evolved into a fundamentally strong hotels market on back of office demand led by IT and Fintech companies. Once life settles around COVID-19, Bengaluru’s hotel market is expected to bounce back, albeit slowly over the next couple of years. The hotels which are linked to office parks could get back to business earlier as compared to the ones with huge banqueting and conferencing facilities. Leisure destinations around Bengaluru such as Coorg, Chikmaglur and Kabini will also likely witness some revenge travel from the city dwellers although this demand could be intermittent.” says Jaideep Dang, Managing Director, Hotels & Hospitality Group (India), JLL

The Silicon Valley of India is expected to see a greater interest from private equity players, high-net-worth individuals and distressed asset funds as they capitalise on opportunities to invest in hotel assets which would be valued at a discount to their pre-COVID-19 values. However, transactions will likely only occur once travel restrictions are further eased and site visits are facilitated.

The good news in case of Bengaluru city is that there will be limited distressed asset sales.  “Owing to the ownership profile, a significant portion of hotel owners in Bengaluru are long-term holders with strong balance sheets and are better placed to weather out the pandemic when compared to other markets in India,” points out the report. However, a few distressed sales may occur in the market from owners that are unable to service their existing debt. Some owners who had already taken a decision to sell prior to COVID-19 are expected to still go ahead with their monetization, the report states.

Independence day Quote

“It has been an unprecedented medical crisis, the number of COVID-19 cases recorded worldwide has passed the 18 million mark and understandably, there is great amount of fear and anxiety. Yet, we must be hopeful, as scientists are working against the clock at an indescribable pace, to develop a vaccine. India is at the forefront of this effort with several companies having made excellent progress and I am optimistic that within a year, we will have a vaccine.

However, an equally great concern is that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which include cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, respiratory ailments etc.  pose a bigger threat to the future of humanity and account for close to 80 per cent of global mortality.  Bearing this hard reality in mind, it is very important that patients battling chronic diseases do not neglect their health any longer on account of the pandemic and seek timely medical attention. Further, a delay could also lead to emergencies on account of uncontrolled progression of NCDs, choking the medical ecosystem in our country.

Overcoming this crisis and a resolute determination to be free from NCDs must be our collective goal on Independence Day 2020. Just as we are combatting COVID-19, similarly, a war against NCDs must be an equally important imperative for India as the prevalence of these diseases is becoming younger.

According to the World Economic Forum, by 2030, the global economic impact would be over $30 trillion and India’s share in it could be around $ 3.8 trillion, unless remedial action is taken up rightaway to mitigate the loss of lives due to NCDs. A silent crisis for the country, NCDs can lead to serious socioeconomic consequences and an adverse impact on the GDP.

While 2020 will be known for the crushing impact of the pandemic, yet the second decade of the 21st century ushered in game changing advances in healthcare fueled by Artificial Intelligence, Automation, Robotics, 3D Printing, and many such developments, which will all be transformational in the journey of healing. In addition, healthcare in post pandemic world will be defined by enhanced accessibility and convenience, as care models will move along with the individual and be accessible, whenever and wherever they need it. I look forward to the future of healthcare, which would be free of boundaries of any kind.”
