JICA undertakes PAN India study to understand the

JICA undertakes PAN India study to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and V-shesh Learning Services Private Limited have undertaken a pan-India study to comprehend the “Impact of COVID-19 on people with disabilities” in India in the first quarter of the current year 2021. The focus of this study was to determine and assess the medium to long term effects of COVID-19 on the lives of Persons with Disabilities. The pandemic has put immense burden on the government delivery system, as Governments, DPOs and NGOs have encountered significant challenges to provide aid, relief materials, and assistance to Persons with Disabilities across India. These impediments were most prominent in areas pertaining to education, training, jobs, and daily living. Through the inputs from this research, JICA aims to establish appropriate development plans in response to emergency circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study focuses on three key points, (i) Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), (ii) Response to the pandemic for PWDs by Government (Central and State) and, (iii) Recommendations for JICA’s COVID-19 response support programs specifically targeting PWDs.

Covid-19 has had many detrimental impacts on the lives of Persons with Disabilities. A total of four major impacts were identified during the study: Daily Living, Education, access to Healthcare facilities and Livelihood. In trying to maintain social distance, they often had isolate from their families which led to feelings of loneliness and confusion. People with disabilities depend majorly on care giving support, 64.8% of the respondents reported facing severe challenges in accessing care giving services due to fear of infection and limited transport. Accessibility to online learning proved to be another challenge due to absence of smartphone or laptop.

Even when online education did take place, 70% respondents mentioned that the overall learning experience was not at all effective. Students with disabilities in higher education institutions faced incremental challenges without additional faculty time, student volunteers, scribes etc. Amidst the pandemic, Persons with Disabilities have often been unable to seek healthcare services and a shocking 47.4% of respondents were amongst those. Shortage of medical products, problems with supply chains and transportation further added to their distress and 25.85% respondents faced reduced or no access to prescribed medicines. Loss of livelihood and a steady source of income has affected many persons with disabilities, 13.4% of the respondents lost their jobs during the pandemic and among those who continued jobs 64.8% mentioned facing obstacles at work due to inaccessibility and social inclusion. A lack of digital connect affected those in rural areas far more as they lost access to skilling and training opportunities.  People with lesser known disabilities faced inconveniences with access to critical care due to COVID-19 protocol.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Katsuo Matsumoto, Chief Representative, JICA India said, “COVID-19 has had a detrimental effect on India's underprivileged and marginalized communities. JICA aspires to be a pillar of support in the face of adversity, such as the current pandemic. The intensity and impact of COVID-19 on the PWDs has been far more severe as compared to their non-disabled peers, especially in areas like daily living, education, health, and livelihood. JICA aims to create support programmes particularly to help and assist PWDs”

The study has helped JICA in identifying the four major sectors that could benefit from JICA support programmes. (a) Education & Daily living; (b) Skill Development, Employment & Livelihood; (c) Health & Well being and (d) A Private Sector programme to address gaps across sectors through an enterprise-led approach.

Based on these findings from the report, JICA, with the help of the respective Government Implementing Agencies aims to rehabilitate the existing projects, especially those in the education, skill & livelihood, and health sector to add a disabilities component as an affirmative response to mitigate the impact of COVID-19.

Flipkart brings festive cheer to Bharat with

Flipkart brings festive cheer to Bharat with pan-India
supply chain expansion

  • Expands last-mile reach with more than 3,000 facilities, strengthening presence in tier-III cities and beyond
  • Infrastructure expansion will support new livelihood opportunities, help bring MSMEs, Sellers & Artisans closer to market

To cater to the growing needs of millions of new and existing consumers coming online and to support market access for lakhs of MSMEs, Sellers, Artisans & Kiranas, Flipkart, India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, has significantly expanded its supply chain across the country. This massive infrastructure  investment is aimed at bringing the festive cheer to Bharat consumers’ doorstep ahead of the festive season and BBD (the Big Billion Days) festive event. As part of this process, it has increased its last-mile reach with more than 3,000 facilities across the country to provide a fast and efficient e-commerce experience to consumers this festive period. This expansion will also help lakhs of sellers, MSMEs and artisans from smaller towns to connect with a pan-India consumer base through Flipkart’s supply chain.

Overall, Flipkart has added over 3.4 million square feet space across its supply chain assets including fulfillment centres, mother hubs and delivery centres throughout the country. These large fulfillment centres, spanning across an area of up to 5 lakh square feet each, are crucial to ensuring a seamless movement of goods between sellers and buyers. These fulfilment centres along with mother hubs or sortation centres and delivery centres also contribute to large scale creation of direct and indirect employment across the country. With this addition, the total warehousing space for Flipkart now totals to over 18 million square feet in addition to lakhs of square feet of assets from partner brands. This has been further strengthened with the onboarding of over 50,000 kiranas across the country which will help manage a higher number of shipments during the festive season.

Amitesh Jha, Senior Vice-President, Ekart and Marketplace, Flipkart said, “Flipkart has always been committed to bringing consumers online to ensure equitable distribution of the benefits of e-commerce. The pandemic has  accelerated the expansion of our supply chain across the country, particularly smaller cities, to meet growing demands for e-commerce services. Also, keeping in mind the growth of e-commerce over the next few years, this expansion will enable us to connect millions of consumers across the country with lakhs of sellers and artisans in a fast and efficient manner. During the festive season, this additional space and infrastructure investment will also boost local employment, particularly for people who went back to their hometowns due to the lockdown, and create opportunities for local businesses to scale up their operations significantly with Flipkart.”

This expanded network of supply chain assets is important to serve the millions of new consumers from smaller cities who are coming online to experience the value and convenience of e-commerce. It also helps strengthen Flipkart’s presence in metros as well as tier-II, III cities and beyond such as Ladakh, Bishnupur (Manipur), and Dimapur (Nagaland), while creating thousands of local job opportunities. This festive season, Flipkart is creating nearly 70,000 direct jobs and lakhs of indirect jobs through its pan-India supply chain.

The COVID-19 induced pandemic has brought about tectonic shifts in consumer purchase patterns and has accelerated sellers’ transition to online platforms across products categories as they look for an enhanced role in e-commerce in their lives. From essentials such as groceries to grooming products, WFH furniture to home appliances, e-commerce has become the preferred choice for consumers and sellers across the country. While metros accounted for a large percentage of this trend before the pandemic, the pandemic has accelerated the transition of consumers and sellers from tier-II and tier-III markets to e-commerce. Flipkart’s expansion of supply chain in these regions ahead of the festive season will create a win-win situation for consumers, sellers, artisans and other ecosystem partners.

The expansion of the supply chain is in line with the large-scale employment Flipkart is creating with the upcoming festive season and the Big Billion Days. This will also contribute to making e-commerce more inclusive with broader participation of women across Flipkart’s supply chain.

Institution of Engineers (India) Congratulates Power Engineers of the Country for Excellent Operation

Institution of Engineers (India) Congratulates Power Engineers of the Country for Excellent Operation of National Grid during pan India ‘Lights Switch Off’ Event.

Er.  Narendra  Singh,  President,  The  Institution  of  Engineers  (India)  congratulated  the  power engineers  of  the  Country  working  in  National  Load  Despatch  Centre,  State  Load  Despatch Centres, Power Grid, DISCOMs, Transmission Utilities, NTPC, NHPC, SJVNL, THDC, IPPs etc. who  rose to the occasion to meet  this  unprecedented  challenge   and  managed    the  National  Grid operations successfully, maintaining the  power system parameters during the ‘lights switch off’ event on 5th April.

Heeding to the call of Hon’ble Prime Minister, about 23 crore consumers (18 crore rural households and 5 crore urban households), at 9 PM on 5th April, voluntarily switched off their lights for 9 minutes. This resulted in abnormal load fluctuation – large reduction of power within 2-4 minutes and then sudden recovery 9 minutes later, which called for extremely careful planning and power management at the generation end as well as in the Transmission and Distribution elements.

While sharing the incident with Press and Media, President, The Institution of Engineers (India) said that the total reduction in all India demand recorded during the event was 31089 MW. The all-India  demand  which  was   1,16,880  MW  at  8.45 pm   started  reducing,  reaching a  minimum demand of 85,799 MW at 9.10pm. Subsequently, the demand started picking up and settled to around 1,14,400 MW at 10.10pm. The meticulous planning and grid management resulted in maintaining the Grid Frequency during the entire period in the range from 50.26 Hz to 49.70 Hz. The reduction of the total 10950 MW generation capacity during this period was shared by the three major sources - thermal (6992 MW), gas (1951 MW) and wind generation (2007 MW). Advance actions such as switching off transmission lines, changing SVC, STATCOM, HVDC set points etc. were taken prior to the event for keeping voltages and line loading within permissible limits.

Er. Narendra Singh, President, The Institution of Engineers (India)  said that  in this challenging conditions,  operation  of Indian National Grid,  which  is  largest  Synchronous  Grid  in the world, with  stability,   has  been  a momentous and  remarkable  achievement for  which Power  engineers  of  the  country  deserve  accolades.

While lauding the extraordinary work being done by medical professionals in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, he highlighted the fact that engineers are contributing significantly during this ‘lock-down’ period by maintaining a variety of essential services and many are also engaged in innovating much needed cost-effective medical equipment such as ventilators.

Tiruchirapalli Local Centre of IEI congratulates all Power Engineers for the excellent planning in handling the light off at 9 pm on 5 April 20. In this regard the press release issued by the president of IEI is given below.
