IFFI 2025: Aakkaatti Bags the ‘Best Film Recognition Award’
The Tamil feature film Aakkaatti has been honoured with the “Best Film Recognition Award” under the WAVES Film Bazaar section at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
Director Jai Laxmii, Co-producer Sunil Kumar, Sound Designer Hari Prasad, and Casting Director Sugumar Shanmugam attended the ceremony and received the award in person.
Set in rural South Tamil Nadu, Aakkaatti delves into the cultural tradition of Thaaymaman Seer Varisai (the maternal uncle’s ceremonial responsibilities). The film sensitively portrays how such customs shape emotional and social pressures, revealing the fragile human emotions that unfold within these age-old practices.
Director Jai Laxmii, making her feature debut with Aakkaatti, previously participated in Nalaya Iyakkunar – Season 6, where she was recognised as a finalist for her adapted short-film screenplay.
The film stars Antony, known for his powerful performance in Merkku Thodarchi Malai, alongside Mullaiyarasi in a prominent lead role.
