2022 has just started, and it's award season again. Entertainment Industry's biggest awards – the Oscars today announced the names of two hundred seventy-six feature films that are eligible for this year's prestigious honor. Out of the eligible 276 films, Suriya starrer Jai Bhim has been selected to vie for this prestigious award. This is the only Tamil language movie that has made it to the eligibility list this year. It is note worthy that last year Suriya’s “Soorarai Pottru” made it to the 93rd Academy Awards eligibility list.

Since the movie's release on Amazon Prime, it has been praised for focusing on a hushed-up topic that deals with the unjust treatment of an oppressed tribe in the state. Recently the Academy also posted a behind the scene video of the movie on their official youtube channel, which created a buzz in the international film arena. The movie had also received official entry to the prestigious Golden Globes 2022 in the Non-English language Movie category. 

Jai Bhim is a Tamil language movie Inspired by a true landmark case in Tamilnadu in the 90s. It narrates the story of Rajakannu and Sengeni, who belong to the Irula Tribe. A chance incident overturns their life as Rajakannu is subjected to wrathful custodial torture by the local police. The film is written and directed by T. J. Gnanavel and produced by Jyotika and Suriya under 2D Entertainment. The film stars Suriya and Lijomol Jose with Manikandan, Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh and others in supporting roles.

The Oscar nomination voting begins on Thursday, January 27, 2022, and nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. The award ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Dolby®️ Theatre at Hollywood & Highland®️ in Hollywood and televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

with a surprise visit to Express Avenue Mall, Chennai

~Fans challenged to hold their laughter for a minute by Contestants of the upcoming show which launches on Amazon Prime Video on August 27~

t was a comical day, one certainly to remember as Amazon Prime Video took Chennai on a hysterical ride today along with the contestants of LOL: Enga Siri Paappom. Visitors at the Express Avenue Mall were taken by surprise at the Central Atrium area that saw some contestants from the upcoming comedy reality series actually give them an experience of the unique format and showcase their A-game humour, leaving them in splits, just like how they promise to do on the show. Present at the event were, Actor-Comedian Haarathi, Actor Pugal, Actor-Comedian Powerstar Srinivasan and Comics Abhishek, Maya & Syama

The streaming service installed a larger than life 25-foot box-installation made out of opaque glass-sheets which had patrons intrigued. Continuously glancing and with the curiosity increasing, some of the passers-by walked closer and stepped up on the riser to check out what is inside the box. As soon as they got closer to the installation, the glass sheets became transparent and they saw their favourite comedy entertainers who will be seen in LOL: Enga Siri Paappom, inside the box-installation, catching them by surprise! What followed was a laugh-riot, with the comedians challenging patrons with transparent masks on, to a "Can you hold your laughter for 1 minute?" challenge.  The comedians cracked jokes in their unique style, just like on the show and the participants had to control their laughter for 60 seconds and were disqualified even if they smiled! While some actually managed winning the challenge and the exciting prizes and many did not, the one thing that they surely took home is tons and tons of giggles, having interacted so closely with their favourite comedy entertainers and having experienced the show format first-hand.

 

LOL: Enga Siri Paappom, an international unscripted comedy reality show, that is all set to premiere on 27^th August exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. It features ten participants Maya S. Krishnan, Abishek Kumar, Premgi Amaren, Harathi Ganesh, RJ Vignesh Kanth, Powerstar Srinivasan, Pugazh, Baggy, Syama Harini and Satish; along with Late Vivekh and Shiva as judges. The format of the show requires the contestants to be locked up in room for six hours where they try their level best to make their fellow contestants laugh but they themselves can’t even smile.

On behalf of the Eelam Tamil diaspora organisations around the world we write this letter to seek your support for our campaign against the web series Family man 2.
 
We, as victims of the biggest genocide in this century, note with concern the falsification of the just struggle of Eelam Tamils against the state oppression in the above web series and strongly condemn it.
 
As the first step, we have registered our protest through memorandums to Amazon Prime head offices for their part in releasing this web series on their platform. Despite the difficult period of COVID-19 pandemic, the world-wide Tamil diaspora has spontaneously started to demonstrate in front of the Amazon Prime offices. First of such demonstration was in front of Amazon Offices in London on Monday, 21 June 2021 adhering to COVID-19 regulations.
 
It is very sad to note that the series has been produced using our own Tamil brothers and sisters, especially since some of the actors and the script writers are from Tamil Nadu. Even though we tend to believe that they have participated through their lack of understanding of the atrocities encountered by the Eelam Tamils and the micro political agenda in this series that try to tarnish the image of a victim community, such behaviours have hurt us very much and pained immeasurably.

 

Although the directors/producers of Family Man 2 series have stated that the series have been a fictional product, the usage of words such as ‘Eelam Tamils’, ‘Point Pedro’, ‘Eelam’ and ‘North Sri Lanka’ as well as similarity of scenes to the last stages of the genocidal war in Sri Lanka and violent streaks exhibited by the characters clearly demonstrates the fabricated agenda to illustrate the Eelam Tamils as people prone to mindless violence.
 
The life of Tamil women in the freedom struggle has been falsely characterised, showing that these women would go to any extent, even to sexually expose themselves, to achieve their goals and this has spread shock waves to the world at large. This is deplorable.
 
In addition, this series depicts Eelam Tamils as terrorists, wherever they reside while the reality is the opposite. For the past twelve years, we have been seeking remedies against the injustices caused by the genocide in a peaceful manner and in accordance with the mechanisms of international laws.  Still these kinds of steps are being taken with the aim of suppressing our efforts.
 
All the Tamil people in Tamil Nadu have always supported and continue to support their brothers and sisters in Eelam. Tamil Nadu film industry has also always supported the Eelam Tamils cause. Therefore, we humbly request that they should avoid the production of these types of films in the future. We also request that a resolution is passed in the South Indian Artists Association, Directors Association and the Producers Council not to produce or release this sort of films in the future.
 
We therefore request our brothers and sisters in the Tamil cinema field especially actors, script writers, directors, producers, and any other film industrialists not to take part in any similar actions in future.
 
Australian Tamil Congress (ATC), British Tamils Forum (BTF), Irish Tamils Forum (ITF), La Maison du Tamil Eelam (MTE), Norwegian Council of Eelam Tamils (NCET), National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT), Solidarity Group for Peace and Justice (SGPJ - South Africa) and United States Tamil Action Group (USTAG) have collectively written a letter to Tamil Nadu Films Directors Association, Tamil Film Producers Council, and the South Indian Artists Association in this respect.
