NIT Trichy conducted a vaccination drive jointly
with REC/NIT Trichy Alumni Association

National Institute of Technology Tiruchirapalli (NITT), conducted a vaccination camp within the campus with support from Trichy District Administration & Alumni of NIT Trichy, through RECAL (REC/NIT Trichy  Alumni Association).

RECAL has been supporting the larger NIT Trichy family (alumni, students, faculty, staff, neighborhood) to overcome these trying times through the RECAL CARES initiative.  Oxygen Concentrators for the 
campus hospital, Scholarships for students who lost their parents, research grant to develop a mobile Oxygen Generator, food rations, equipment and support to the PHC’s and GH surrounding the campus have  been provided through the RECAL CARES initiative.

The vaccination camp took place on 26th June between 9.30 AM and 3.30 PM , Saturday to vaccinate all the eligible and willing employees and dependents of the Institute above 18 years against COVID infection.

The vaccination drive was presided by the Institute Director Dr.Mini Shaji Thomas, who visited the site with the Deputy Director  Dr.Umapathy and the Registrar of the Institute Dr.Arivazhagan. The 
Director conveyed that vaccines are safe and an important tool to protect everyone in the present COVID scenario and encouraged all the employees to come forward and take the vaccination. The Medical 
Officer Dr. R. Priyanka and the medical team of the Institute Hospital along with the Trichy administration team conducted the vaccination drive.

310 vaccinations were administered in a single day during this vaccination camp with all the COVID precautions and the SOP in place. The beneficiaries were screened by the doctors, after checking the 
vital parameters were recommended for vaccination. Post-vaccination, people were observed for 30 minutes duration and were given the provisional vaccination certificate.

23.04.2021 அன்று தொடங்கி வைக்கப்பட்டது. இந்த மூன்று நாள் நிகழ்வை 
என்ஐடி திருச்சியின் வேதித் தொழில் நுட்ப   சங்கம் - சிஇஏ ( Chemical 
Engineering Association (ChEA) ஆன்லைன் மூலம் ஏற்பாடு செய்து இருந்தது.

இந்த  தொழில்நுட்ப கருத்தரங்கத்தை (அல்கெமி ’21) வேதித் தொழில் நுட்ப   
துறையைச் சேர்ந்த பேராசிரியர் டி. கே. ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் 
வரவேற்புரையாற்றினார். அவர், உலகளவில் பல்வேறு பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில் வேதி பொறியியல் துறையின் பங்களிப்பு குறித்து விளக்கினார்.  அல்கெமி ’21 மாணவ  தலைவர் சூர்யா, ஒட்டுமொத்த ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் காண்டே ஆஷிஷ் மற்றும் மாணவர் 
அமைப்பாளர்களின் ஒட்டுமொத்த குழுவினருக்கும் அவர் தனது பாராட்டுகளைத்  தெரிவித்தார். மேலும் அல்கெமி ஆசிரிய ஆலோசகராக தொடர்ந்து ஆதரித்த  பேராசிரியர் சரத் சந்திரபாபுக்கு அவர் நன்றி தெரிவித்தார். இறுதியாக,  பார்வையாளர்களின் உற்சாகமான பங்கேற்புக்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்தார். இதைத்  தொடர்ந்து இயக்குநர் டாக்டர் மினி ஷாஜி தாமஸ் தொடக்கி வைத்து  சிறப்புரையாற்றினார். வேதித் தொழில் நுட்ப   துறையின் தலைவர் பேராசிரியர்  பி.கலைச்செல்வி துறையின் பல்வேறு முன்னேற்றங்களையும், சாதனைகளையும்  குறிப்பிட்டு, பங்கேற்பாளர்கள், அமைப்பாளர்கள் மற்றும் ஆசிரிய  உறுப்பினர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் இந்த நிகழ்வை பெரிய வெற்றியாக  மாற்றியமைத்ததற்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்தார். சிறப்பு விருந்தினராக இந்திய  வேதித் தொழில் நுட்ப   நிறுவனத்தின் தலைவர் பேராசிரியர் எம் கே ஜா கலந்து கொண்டு சிறப்பித்தார். இவர் பெட்ரோ கெமிக்கல் இன்ஜினியரிங் துறையின் நவீன தொழில்நுட்பத்தை விவரித்து உரை வழங்கினார்.

தொடக்க நாளிலும் நடைபெறும். இந்த ஆண்டு ஃப்ளூர் ஆஸ்திரேலியா லிமிடெட்  நிறுவனத்தின் முன்னணி பொறியியலாளர் திரு. ரவி சங்கரன், 'செயல்முறை  பாதுகாப்பு' குறித்த சொற்பொழிவை வழங்கினார். இந்த விரிவுரை மாணவர்களுக்கு  வேதித் பொறியயில் தொழில் குறித்து சிறந்த நுண்ணறிவுகளை வழங்கும்.

மூன்று நாட்களில் பல நிகழ்வுகள், காகித விளக்கக்காட்சிகள், வினாடி 
வினாக்கள்   மற்றும்  புகழ்மிக்க பிரபலங்களான  முனைவர் சுரேஷ்குமார் 
பாட்டியா, பேராசிரியர், குயின்ஸ்லாந்து பல்கலைக்கழகம்) மற்றும் முனைவர் 
சுதாசத்வா பாபு, இயக்குநர் அறிவியல் தொழில்துறை ஆராய்ச்சி கவுன்சில் 
போன்றவர்களின்   விரிவுரைகள் நடைபெறவுள்ளது. மாட்லாப் (MATLAB), ஆஸ்பென்  (ASPEN)  போன்ற பல பயிலரங்குகளும் (worshop) மற்றும் ஆய்வு கட்டுரை  எழுதுதல் ஆகியவற்றிக்கு சிறந்த வல்லுநர்களால் கைகோர்த்து பயிற்சி  அளிக்கவும்  ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன.  இது அனைத்தும் வேதி பொறியயில்  மாணவர்களுக்கும் பயனளிக்கும்.

அல்கெமி , 2013 முதல் வெற்றிகரமாக நடத்தப்பட்டு வருகிறது, இந்தியா 
முழுவதும் உள்ள பல்வேறு நிறுவனங்களில் இருந்து ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் 1000 
க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்களின் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்து வருகிறது. இந்த ஆண்டு,   
COVID-19 தொற்று நிலைமையின்  போதும்  கூட இந்த தொழில்நுட்ப 
கருத்தரங்குக்கு  (அல்கெமி ’21)  அதிக எண்ணிக்கையிலான பதிவுகள்  மற்றும்  பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் வந்துள்ளார்கள். முடிவில் மாணவ தலைவர் பி.ஜே. சுரேஷ்

The technical symposium of the Department of Chemical Engineering at NIT Trichy

The technical symposium of the Department of Chemical Engineering at NIT Trichy,  Alchemy, was inaugurated on 23rd April, 2021. The three day event is organized by the Chemical Engineering Association (ChEA) of NIT Trichy. Alchemy shifted to the online platform this year to continue
spreading knowledge and imparting a sense of interest in the field of chemical engineering,
despite all challenges.

The event kickstarted with an address by Prof. T. K. Radhakrishnan from the department of Chemical Engineering. He addressed the audience thanking them for their enthusiastic participation. He also noted his appreciation to the chairperson of Alchemy, Surya, the overall coordinator, Kande Ashish and the entire team of student organisers behind Alchemy. He thanked Prof. Sarat Chandrababu for his continued support as the faculty advisor of Alchemy. Prof. Sarat Chandrababu has been a major support to the symposium and has always been present during all technical activities. This was followed by the presidential address by the director, Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas. Prof. P. Kalaichelvi, the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering was also present and thanked all the participants, organizers and members of the faculty for their support in making the event a grand success. 

Prof. M  K Jha, the president of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers was  invited as the chief guest. He gave an enlightening speech elaborating the cutting-edge technology in the field of petrochemical engineering.

The Dr. S. H. Ibrahim Endowment Lecture, initiated in memory of the founding Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, will also take place during the inaugural day of Alchemy. This year Mr. Ravi Sankaran, lead engineer at Fluor Australia Ltd, has been invited to 
give the lecture on 'Process Safety'. He is an experienced industry personnel and this lecture will give students great insights about the chemical engineering industry.

Multiple events will take place over the course of the three days. This includes paper presentations, quizzes and guest lectures by eminent personalities like Suresh Kumar Bhatia (Professor, University 
of Queensland) and Sudhhasatwa Babu (Director of Council of Scientific Industrial Research). Several workshops have  also been organised. They will provide  hands-on training in Matlab, Aspen and research  paper writing. This will be beneficial to all the chemical engineering students.

Alchemy has been conducted successfully since 2013 and attracts over 1000 students every year from different institutions all over India. The symposium witnessed high numbers of registrations this year too  and is off to a great start even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NIT Tiruchirappalli retains the top position in TEQIP - III Programme

16.04.2021: NIT Tiruchirappalli consecutively top performed in TEQIP III similar to TEQIP I and II. Based on the recently conducted performance audit by Prof N.C.SHIVAPRAKASH, Professor, IISc Bangalore, the audit score obtained was 1.03 for a scale of 3.0 (1.00 being the highest score) which is top among all NITs and all Govt. Institutes which participated in TEQIP III said Dr Mini Shaji Thomas, Director of  NIT Trichy.

Third phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (referred to as TEQIP-III) implemented during 2018-2021, in addition to improving the quality of Engineering Education in existing institutions has a special consideration for Low Income States and Special Category States and support to strengthen few affiliated technical universities to improve their policy, academic and 
management practices.

Being top performer in TEQIP-I and II, NIT Tiruchirappalli was selected for TEQIP- III with a funding of Rs. 7.7 crores and as the mentor Institute for Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology,
Pahargaon, Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Under twinning arrangement, NIT Tiruchirappalli has been supporting DBRAIT in various activities such as SAR preparation for NBA Accreditation, Procurement of Goods and enable faculty members to  pursue higher studies (M.S. and Ph.D.) at NIT Trichy. Students of  DBRAIT also share the NIT Tiruchirappalli laboratory facilities and get trained in the Siemens Centre for Automation.

TEQIP -III Project focus on three objectives : (a) Improving quality and equity in engineering institutions in focus states viz. 7 Low Income States, eight states in the North-East of India, three Hill 
states viz. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Andaman  and Nicobar Islands (b) System-level initiatives to strengthen sector governance and performance which include widening the scope of  Affiliating Technical Universities (ATUs) to improve their policy, academic and management practices towards affiliated institutions, and (c) Twinning Arrangements to Build Capacity and Improve Performance of  institutions and ATUs participating in focus states.

Some of the activities under the scope of the TEQIP- III project are:

Procurement of Goods (equipment, furniture, books Learning Resources,software and minor items) and minor civil works, Improvement in Teaching, Learning and Research competence, Improve student learning, Student employability, Increasing faculty productivity and motivation, Establishing a Twinning arrangements with institutions under Sub-component 1.1 to build capacity and improved performance.

Under TEQIP – III various activities were carried out at NIT Trichy to benefit students and faculty. 54 B.Tech. students  visited various universities in Canada for internship under R&D head during May to 
July 2019 as part of the  Student Mobility Programme by MITACS Canada & MHRD. GATE training was provided to B.Tech. final year students in the year 2019 and 2020.

Many students craked GATE with very high scores. E-books have been procurred and made available to students to access from their place of  stay.

Workshops like “Faculty Startups & Entrepreneurship, Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education, Computer Skills” to non-teaching staffs, were conducted. Faculty Induction Training Programme was conducted for all newly recruited faculty members. International conferences were organised by almost all departments with Teqip-III support, bringing experts to the campus. The papers 
presented were published in reputed journals. Orientation Programme for the first year B.Tech. students of all branches were conducted.The Director congratulated the team of TEQIP III for adding yet 
another feather to the NIT Cap.

National Workshop on “Perspectives and Challenges in Outcome Based Research”
(NWPCOBR) inaugurated at NIT Trichy Trichy: NIT Tiruchirappalli is organizing a 5-day National Workshop on “Perspectives and Challenges in Outcome Based Research” under the aegis of AICTEMARGDHARSHAN Scheme, from July 13-17, 2020 (via video conferencing). The
Coordinators of the programme are Dr. K. N. Sheeba, Associate Professor, Department of
Civil Engineering, Dr.Sishaj Simon , Associate Professor, Electrical and Electronics
Engineering and Dr. Nisha Radhakrishnan, Associate Professor, Department of Civil
Engineering. The program was inaugurated in virtual platform through MS Teams
meetings at 9.00 a.m. on 13th July 2020 by the Chief Guest Padma Shri Dr. T. Ramasami,
Former Secretary,Department of Science and Technology (DST), in the presence of
Mr.Nitin Kanwade,General Manager Manufacturing, TATA Motors and Dr. Mini Shaji
Thomas, Director NIT Tiruchirappalli.

Dr. K. N. Sheeba, Associate Professor and coordinator welcomed the virtual gathering
and Dr. N. Sivakumaran,Professor and Chief coordinator, AICTE Margdarshan Scheme
briefed on the various activities carried out and initiated for mentee Institutes.He said
so far eight Faculty Development Programmes were organized in the thrust areas
with participation of faculty members from each mentee institutions, Internships were
arranged for B.Tech. Students and faculty members in various departments for a period
of one month.National level workshops on outcome based education was organised to
train the faculty members of mentee institutions to apply for accreditation
process.Current National level workshops on NWPCOBR focused on to train faculty
members to enhance outcome based research.He also said seperate workshops and
guest lectures are planned for mentee towards submission and processing of prequalifier
and submission of self assessment report (SAR) for National Board of
Accreditation (NBA).

Dr. Nisha Radhakrishnan, Associate Professor and coordinator briefed about the
workshop, mentioning this workshop is designed to enlighten researchers on topics of
utmost importance for an effective research program. It is also aimed at encouraging
the participants at the undergraduate/post graduate level to take up quality and
outcome based research work. The programme would enlighten the participants
through lectures on Research of National Importance, Research Methodology, Technical
Writing, Industrial Perspective Towards Research, Data analysis, Modelling Skills,
Creativity in Research; Ethics in Research, Copy Rights/Plagiarism Issues, Intellectual
Property Rights, Research Tools, Optimisation, Machine learning and more. She added
that there were more than 175 participants registered from all parts of the country. The
programme has lined up for lectures from esteemed speakers from the academia,
industry and research institutes such as Padma Shri Dr. T. Ramasami (Former Secretary,
DST), Mr.Nitin Kanwade (GM Manufacturing, TATA Motors) during the Inauguration,
followed by a line of speakers such as Mr. Kalaiselvan (Senior Director, CDAC

Prof.Mini Shaji Thomas, Director NITT, in her presidential address said that the institute
had achieved with a major milestone of moving up the ranking ladder by one slot to
NINETH in NIRF ranking 2020 in Engineering category, and maintains the top position
among NITs for the fifth year in a row, to be part of National Super Computing Mission
(NSM), Super Computer, Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) Scheme and
National MOOCs Coordinator for offering Engineering Courses at UG and PG level by
MHRD, GOI. She also mentioned that this online mode of content delivery and online
platform based interactions are going to be the nature of work in near future. She also
mentioned that the lockdown does not hinder the institute progress. This way she also
wished the participants for joining this programme to get inspired and improved. She
added that AICTE Margdarshan Scheme will help to motivate the faculty members to
enhance teaching learning skills and students to come up with innovative ideas and
projects and widen the exposure to the prototype development on enhanced
educational standards and research aptitude. She also informed the participants of 4
new centre of excellences in the institute, with two centres functioning and 2 in the
anvil and invited the participants to consider utilizing the facility for their innovative
research.

Mr.Nitin Kanwade,GM Manufacturing, TATA Motors, the guest of honor, in his inaugural
address spoke about his long association with NIT Trichy through an MoU signed
between the two institutes.He also highlighted the importance of Industry 4.0 and
digitalization. He indicated approaches such as Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA),
Plan Do Check Act (PDCA), Standardize Do Check Act (SDCA) in practice. He highlighted
different revolutions starting from Industry 1.0, 2.0, 3.0. Mr Nitin indicated that now
presently there is a transition from Industry 3.0 to 4.0. He highlighted different
terminologies associated with Industry 4.0 such as Cyber Physical Systems (CPS),
Digitization, Digital Twin and so on. Mr Nitin indicated that in Tata Motors presently
initiatives in Industry 4.0 in manufacturing viewpoint in terms of productivity
improvement; in design front in terms of proto making, product Lifecycle Management
(PLM), Digital Mock Up (DMU) and so on are done . Also, he highlighted on how
industries are handling numerous product variants and wider customer preferences. At
the end Mr Nitin mentioned about the trends in electric vehicle technology and the
scope of manufacturing batteries in Indian scenario.

Padma Shri Dr. T. Ramasami inaugurated the programme and gave the Chief Guest
address. He mentioned about the change to virtual mode of programme are at an
advantage and he appreciated the efforts put in by the faculty members and the NITT
administration in the recent past for having competing with the top IITs and for
securing first position among non-IIT institutions. Moreover he also mentioned that
NITT is producing more researchers.He also insisted importance of linking R&D to
social outcome and research developed in Laboratories need to nurture industry
towards an outcome based research.Institution in India should focus more on public
private partnership mode that can be used to fund, build, and operate projects based on
thrust areas of research and development.

In his lecture on , “R&D Funding in Context of Low Resource Setting”, he said that R&D
should be passion driven, purpose driven and people driven. He mentioned that there
should always have a vibrant ecosystem for doing R&D namely having intellectual
freedom, Progressive planning, De bureaucratization of funding and Freedom from
Feudalism. He gave an detailed idea of different funding sources where innovative
proposals can be submitted. He emphasized on the moto for “Convergence of
Innovation” which links science, technology and innovation to people. Dr. T. Ramasami
also spoke about the changing National R&D in India. He mentioned that India today has
37000 colleges, 750 universities, 9 science departments,680 national R&D institutes
and about 2,20,000 Full Time Equivalent R&D professionals and gave a chart of growth
of research from Pre 1947 to the current time.

Dr. Ramasami spoke about the primary, secondary and tertiary role of an academic
institution in R&D, mentioning that any academic institute should create and inspire
talent for research careers. He emphazied on R&D transfer saying that University sector
needs to explore new tools for capitalization of its intellectual assets through the acts of
commercialization of technologies. This might call for cultural changes in Indian social
context. In this current situation of conora where everything has come to a standstill,
Funding opportunities for R&D are expanding globally; but investors seek timely
returns from R&D. Corona has taught us the mismatch and time lags among knowledge
and money flows and common people wanting solutions from R&D. Can R&D solve
problems? It should.

B.Tech students of NIT Trichy to get direct admission in

B.Tech students of NIT Trichy to get direct admission in IIT Delhi’s PhD programmes

Trichy: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and National Institute of Technology Trichy (NITT) have signed an MoU for collaboration on academic activities.

The MoU will facilitate direct admission of B.Tech students at NITT to IIT Delhi’s PhD programme, foster academic and research collaboration in areas of mutual interest and lead to exchange of faculty and students.

The MoU was signed by Prof V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi and Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT Trichy.

Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT Trichy said, ‘The key feature of this MoU is the excellent opportunity for bright undergrad students for direct PhD admission at IIT-D. We are very positive that this MoU will encourage academic partnership and fruitful research collaborations between NIT-T and IIT-D. The Institute is looking
forward for joint research projects and Faculty exchange programmes.’

Prof V.Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi welcomed the MoU with NIT Trichy and termed it a good opportunity for the faculty and students of both the institutes to collaborate in the area of R&D.Prof Rao added, “We would like to invite other NITs also to enter into similar academic partnership with IIT Delhi.”

Direct PhD Admission

Under this MoU, meritorious B.Tech students of NITT will be provided an opportunity to carry out part of their studies including project work at IIT Delhi and then they will be offered direct admission to PhD without the need to qualify GATE or any other national level examination. Under this scheme, NITT students with a CGPA of 8.00 at the end of their 6th semester (three years) will be eligible to apply for a project in summer and complete their fourth year (7th and 8th
semesters) at IIT Delhi.The students need to submit their transcript, and other academic records and achievements and documentary evidence of any research or internship experience along with their application.

The students are expected to demonstrate sufficient merit in coursework and research during their 7th and 8th semesters (04th year) of the B.Tech to continue to join the PhD programme.After the successful completion of their fourth year, they can be considered for an early admission to the PhD programme at IIT Delhi. The requirement of GATE is waived off since they will enter IIT Delhi with a minimum CGPA of 8.00.It is envisaged that this scheme will also help NITT
B.Tech students to enhance their chances for qualifying for the PMRF fellowship for PhD at IIT Delhi.

During their stay as visiting students, IIT Delhi will not be charging any academic fees, since they will be paying their regular academic fees at NIT Trichy. They, being B.Tech degree students, will also be provided either on-campus or off-campus paid hostel accommodation by IIT Delhi for one-year.
Students and Faculty Exchange IIT Delhi and NIT Trichy will exchange B.Tech, dual degree M.Tech students, research scholars and faculty. The students under the
exchange programme will be classified as special exchange students and they will be permitted to take courses on credit/audit, as well as participate in research activities/internships/project work. The selection and nomination of students will be open throughout the academic year.The faculty of NITT can also apply for suitable postdoc positions/any other opportunities available at IIT Delhi.

Research Collaboration
The faculty from both the institutes will also collaborate in the joint submission of research project proposals, supervision of exchange students and joint research in the disciplines of mutual interest.

NIT, Tiruchirapalli appointed as the National MOOCs Coordinator by MHRD

Ministry of Human Resource Development has appointed NIT, Tiruchirappalli as the
National MOOCs Coordinator for offering Engineering Courses at UG and PG level.
This recognition comes at a time when teaching and learning is moving to digital
platforms and there is great demand for good quality online courses.  NIT Trichy is 
the first Engineering Institute to be added as a National Coordinator, after the 
consortium of NPTEL, for developing Engineering courses.

Congratulating the Faculty, Students, Staff and Alumni of the Institute, Director, 
Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas informed that the courses planned by NIT Tiruchirappalli
will cater to  the needs of the Engineering students across India and the world.
The Institute is planning to produce videos of international quality and will utilize 
the expertise of the faculty available in the NIT system. She attributed this recognition
to the hard work put in by all stakeholders, Faculty, students, staff and alumni, 
which catapulted the Institute to the top 10 in Engineering and top 24 overall in the
NIRF Rankings, which is bringing in laurels, including the Supercomputing facility, 
Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship and the SWAYAM National Coordinator position.

SWAYAM is program initiated by GoI and designed to achieve the three cardinal 
principles of education policy viz., access, equity and quality. The objective of this 
effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most
disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who
have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been
able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy. SWAYAM has courses
from 9th Class till

This is done through a platform that facilitates hosting of all the courses, taught in
classrooms from Class 9 till post-graduation to be accessed by anyone, anywhere 
at any time. All the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the 
country and are available, free of cost to any learner. More than 1,000 specially 
chosen faculty and teachers from across the country have participated in preparing 
these courses.

Already there are nine National Coordinators for SWAYAM,  AICTE (All India
Council for Technical Education) for self-paced and international courses,  NPTEL
(National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) for Engineering, 
UGC (University Grants Commission) for non-technical post-graduation education,
CEC (Consortium for Educational Communication) for under-graduate education, 
NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) for school education, 
NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) for school education,  IGNOU (Indira
Gandhi National Open University) for out-of-school students,  IIMB (Indian Institute of 
Management, Bangalore) for management studies,  NITTTR (National Institute of
Technical Teachers Training and Research) for Teacher Training programme. NIT
Tirucirappalli will be the 10th  National coordinator.

Courses delivered through SWAYAM are available free of cost to the learners, however
 learners wanting a SWAYAM certificate should register for the final proctored exams
that come at a fee and attend in-person at designated centres on specified dates. Eligibility
for the certificate will be announced on the course page and learners will get certificates
only if this criterion is matched. Universities/colleges approving credit transfer for these 
courses can use the marks/certificate obtained in these courses for the same.

UGC has already issued the UGC (Credit Framework for online learning courses through 
SWAYAM) Regulation 2016 advising the Universities to identify courses where credits
can be transferred on to the academic record of the students for courses done on
SWAYAM. AICTE has also put out gazette notification in 2016 and subsequently for adoption
of these courses for credit transfer. The current SWAYAM platform is developed by
Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and NPTEL, IIT Madras with the help of 
Google Inc. and Persistent Systems Ltd.

Teaching and Learning process by NIT through online mode

NIT Trichy has developed a dedicated web portal https://studymaterial.nitt.edu/login.php for uploading the course materials for the benefit of the students. The study materials such as Power Point presentations, lecture notes etc. are uploaded on this portal and students are accessing the study materials using their official email ID credentials from various parts of the country and abroad. Students have also been recommended appropriate online courses in SWAYAM portal for cross references.

Apart from the above arrangements, the faculty members are conducting online lectures through Video Conferencing. Since good broadband connectivity is not available everywhere, recorded online lectures through Video Conferencing are also sent to the students.

Faculty have also used other platforms such as google drive, google classroom, Email and Whatsapp. Students are encouraged to clear their doubts from the faculty concerned through any electronic mode. The students are submitting online assignments which are considered as internal assessments.

As online study modules are not sufficient for laboratory and project work, it is suggested to provide some contact classes after the institute reopnes (a few days depending on the exact date of resumption) with a modified academic calendar, so that the remaining laboratory experiments and project works may be carried out.

The institute is also exploring the possibility of conducting online Exams, if the lockdown period is extended further.

Dr Mini Shaji Thomas,Director, NITT requested all the faculty members to develop innovative methods for teaching learning process adopting electronic mode. This will engage the students and effectively utilize their time for learning the subjects during this lockdown period.  The Institute is also augmenting the facilities for conducting online classes, she added.

MAMCET Signs MoU with Siemens Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing,

M.A.M College of Engineering and Technology, Tiruchirappalli signed  MoU with Siemens Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing, National  Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. The Siemens CoE an  interdisciplinary, industry-backed Centre focuses on Skill Excellence  for engineering graduates through its multidisciplinary  state-of-the-art Laboratories. NIT Trichy’s alumni association (RECAL) conducted an alumni get-together in Chennai on Saturday, Feb 2^nd 2019 at Hotel Turyaa, OMR, Chennai. It was also their occasionto launch the Global Alumni Meet 2020 (GAM 2020) and the recently graduated class of NIT, Trichy in to RECAL. Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT Tiruchy and Dr. Raman, Dean Alumni Relations, NIT Tiruchy and distinguished alumni from the field of academia, entrepreneurship and corporate were present for the meeting. Welcoming the initiative by the alumni, Dr. Thomas said “NIT Trichy is very fortunate to have leading luminaries as its alumni and is very keen to utilize their passion to give back to the college”.

Dr. Raman, Dean Alumni Relations, NIT Tiruchy spoke about the new established Alumni Institute Interactive Cell (AIIC) at the Institute and the how they will work with RECAL to improve the Alumni interaction with the Institute and to ensure that support Alumni who are thinkers, healers, innovators, guides and keepers of their alma mater. He mentioned some of the initiatives taken such as Alumni Visiting Faculty Program, Alumni Designing Industry specific Courses for students, Alumni Mentorship Program and Internship for students in institutions, companies headed or founded by Alumni.

RECAL has chapters in Tiruchy, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, UAE, Singapore and USA (East & West Coast). RECAL also unveiled the Internet of Things (IoT) lab sponsored by the batch of 1981 and the Multi-disciplinary Student Innovation Center (SCIEnT) that was set-up through the efforts of the batch of 1990. “We are planning to expand the alumni interaction and work closely with the institute to enhance the brand NIT Trichy”  saidMr. Krishna Sai, the president of RECAL. The Chennai chapter’s new headed by Mr. James Walter welcomed the gathering.

RECAL Foundation is Charitable Trust with 80G Exemption and also with the require FCRA Clearances to receive funds from across the globe. Most of the RECAL activities including building of the School in the campus for Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff children and also for the children of the surrounding villages, IoT, SCIEnT, Student Scholarships for 52 students are being done through the RECAL Foundation.

As part of the occasion, the Global Alumni Meet (GAM 2020) web site was launched and the registrations were open for the Alumni.  Global Alumni Meet (GAM) 2020 is a Mega Event, curated to explore the realm of old memories and new bonds. More than 2000 Alumni from across the globe will be present for GAM 2020 to revisit all the important friendships and enlightened conversations, very interesting panels and talks by distinguished Alumni, Past & Current Directors, Past & Current Deans and Professors, post and with a side of fabulous entertainment.

The Hall of Fame will be launched during GAM 2020 to showcase the achievements of a handful of our Alumni who have scaled the greatest heights. This Hall of Fame will become a permanent affair and will be set up in our Institute. NIT Trichy director receives IEEE Best Teacher Award

Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, director of NIT Tiruchirappalli, received the IEEE Kerala Section 2019 Best Teacher Award in a glittering ceremony in Kozhikode in the presence of Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan of Infosys and Dr. SivajiChakraborti, director of NIT Calicut.

Mr.Satish Babu, Chairperson of the Awards Committee recognized her as “an outstanding teacher who has promoted values-based education that combines academic excellence with compassion and service to humanity.” He further added that she is “an inspiration to students and teachers alike.”

Dr. Mini Thomas in her acceptance speech, emphasized that she chose teaching profession out of love for imparting knowledge to others, as a service to society, although she had many other job offers and opportunities.  She was excited to receive an award for teaching and encouraged the younger generation to aspire to be teachers, as good quality teachers is the need of the hour for all educational Institutions.  It was also heartening that the award ceremony in Kozhikode brought her back to REC/NIT Calicut, after 3 decades, where she started her teaching career.

Recently, during the floods that ravaged large parts of Kerala and caused massive power shut down, Dr. Mini Thomas responded to a call from the IEEE Kerala Section by providing 500 low cost electric distribution boards as minimum power outlet, with the help of NIT Tiruchirappalli students and faculty.

An electrical engineer from IIT Delhi, Mini Thomas is internationally recognized for her work in the areas of Power System Automation and SCADA.  She was head of the electrical engineering department at JamiaMiliaIslamia before assuming charge as director, NIT Tiruchirappalli.

Under her able guidance, NIT Tiruchirappalli has improved in national and international rankings.  A 180-crore Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing was set up in partnership with Siemens.  The institute signed MoUs with Tata Motors for an augmented engineering program.  BHEL, Trichy is developing the prototype of an electrical vehicle at NIT Trichy.  The Institute developed the 5 year strategic plan last year and is on an implementation path now. The campus won two green awards last year and efforts are on towards a more green and sustainable campus.

The second edition of Square One, the annual outreach event of Pragyan, NIT Trichy’s techno-managerial organisation, was conducted at the GCE (Government College of Engineering), Salem on the 5th of January 2019. The event was attended by 200 odd students from colleges across nearby districts. The inauguration ceremony of the edition of Square One began at around 10 a.m. on 05-01-2019, and was graced by the presence of Dr. G. Vimala Rosaline, the Principal of GCE, Salem and Mr. R. Sundaram, the guest lecturer for the day. The event then officially began.

Mr. R. Sundaram, while talking about his journey as an entrepreneur in India before 2000, encouraged the youngsters of the present to serve the nation, without having to migrate to other countries. He talked for half an hour, inspiring those in the hall, and encouraging them to serve the nation.

Two workshops and three events were conducted through the course of the day, which were beneficial to the participants and tested their technical and managerial aptitude. Prize money worth INR 15000 were distributed to the winners (top three finalists) of the various events.

10 teams participated in the event 'Marketing Hub’ held at 10 a.m. This event aimed to be a platform for participants to unleash their inner marketer, with 3 successive rounds of elimination.

The event ‘Circuitrix’ was held at 10:30 a.m. with a participation of over  teams. The event aimed at building simple and innovative circuits, and consisted of 2 rounds - the MCQ round and a subjective round. The winners were given direct entry to the second round of Circuitrix, which will be held at NIT Trichy during Pragyan ‘19.

A total of 30 teams registered for the ‘Pragyan Memory Challenge’ that was held at 11:30 a.m. The event focused on improving the mnemonic skills of the participants with a series of fun rounds, namely, The Memo-Essay, Confucius Colour and Memolog.

The Industrial Automation workshop was conducted in two batches in the Digital Library building. Organised by Innoviance Technologies, the workshop saw 36 registrations in total.

The Ethical Hacking workshop was conducted in two sessions as well, in the CSE lab. The workshop was conducted by Innoviance Technologies and recorded 22 registrations for the forenoon and afternoon sessions combined..

Both the workshops were well received by the participants, which gave an insight to the participants about the latest in technology to the participants.

All the events concluded by around 05:00 p.m. after which the valediction program was held. The winners of the different competitions were felicitated.
