The six-day national seminar on "Women in Science & Technology: Breaking the Glass Ceiling," which is organised by the Women’s cell and Technical Education and Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP-III)
start-up cell of the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T) began at our campus on March 18, 2019.
The seminar is sponsored by the National Commission for Women and aims to provide a platform for deliberations to identify ways to improve women’s participation in science, mathematics, and technical education.
The inaugural ceremony began with the welcome address by Dr. K.N. Sheeba, a member of the start-up cell, and is followed by an introduction to the institute's Women's cell and Start-up cell by Dr. M. Venkata Krithika, a member of the institute's Internal Complaints Committee. Prof. K.M. Meera Sherrifa Begum, the chairperson of the Internal Complaints Committee, gave a short introduction to the seminar and its objectives. Prof.Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT-T presided over the function. In her presidential address, the director stressed the need for women in science and technology to identify barriers and difficulties in order to overcome them. She also
encouraged the participants to learn from stories of empowerment. Prof.Lillykutty Jacob,Dept of ECE, NIT Calicut formally inaugurated the seminar. She spoke at length on the importance of women's presence
in policy making and the need to address women's issues at both macro and micro levels. Dr. Crystal Dilworth, Dr Crystal Dilworth, California Institute of Technology- a multi-faceted molecular nuclear scientist who was the guest of honour observed that women have the burden of amplifying their voice and perspectives in a patriarchal system. According to her positive change could be achieved only through women's presence in positions of power so that they could make strategic decisions.
Dr. Nisha Radhakrishnan, a start-up cell member, delivered the vote of thanks following which the chief guest and other dignitaries were felicitated by the organisers.
