The Gender Gap Survey released by the World Economic Forum ranked India at 112th place, which is far worse than the preceding year, laying bare the Modi government's absolute apathy towards gender justice, as AIMC has continually pointed out. To put that into perspective, we rank below China (106), Sri Lanka (102), Nepal (101), Brazil (92), and Indonesia (85).
The index takes into account women’s health and survival and economic participation--all of which are dismal. It’s so bad that Modi's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao marketing spend is higher than the allocation towards a girl child. 56% of the schemes budget is spent on advertising BJP whereas only 5 paise is spent on a girl child. This indicates the undoing of parity between a Man and a Woman due to the governments non-commitment to gender justice.
The BJP government has the most number of politicians who are accused of sexually harassing and mistreating women and this is reflected in their approach towards matters of development and welfare of women. As a result of these anti-women policy makers in the government, India now stands at bottom five of the 153 countries when it comes to women’s health and survival and economic participation. Female foeticide is still a stark reality, domestic violence is something women almost expect, while rape continues unabated.
All India Mahila Congress (Apsara) The All India Mahila Congress has been saying all along that BJP government's policies, handling of women’s issues, economy and health are precarious to our fight for more equality and gender justice. The current BJP government’s apathy towards economy, law and order, healthcare and women’s welfare has ensured that India’s future and reputation is ruined on a global stage. Slipping down four places in the gender gap index in the span of 12 months is dangerous and reflects the attitude of the government towards women.
