 MGM TAKES THE LEAD IN STROKE MANAGEMENT

~ Launches first-of-its-kindStroke Rapid Response Team & Stroke Hotline Number ~

On the occasion of World Stroke Day, MGM Healthcare, a super-specialty quaternary care hospital in Chennai, announced the launch of its comprehensive Stroke RapidResponse Team (SRRT)and Stroke Hotline Number 044 4200 4200to ensure proper and timely care for the rising number of stroke cases. The inauguration of the SRRT was felicitated by Prof G Arjundas, Senior Consultant Neurologist, Chennai & Prof Vijay Sharma, Senior Consultant, Neurologist, Singapore.

Noted actor and politician R Sarathkumar was present at the virtual launch. He lauded MGM Healthcare’s continued innovations and efforts towards providing quality healthcare to one and all.

The Institute of Neurosciences and Spinal Disorders at MGM Healthcare has initiated the SRRT by forming a team of multiple medical expertsthat includes Emergency Physicians, Radiologists, Critical Care Specialists, Neurologistsand Neurosurgeons who will initiate immediate treatment for those patients who have suffered a stroke. The Stroke Hotline Number is aimed at providing immediate medical assistance and an ambulance to bring the patient to the medical facility as soon as possible. The RRST will then administer treatment and procedures based on international protocols and provide advanced technical support to cater to the patient’s emergency.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sridhar K, Director & Group Head, Institute of Neurosciences & Spinal Disorders, MGM Healthcare,said, “People are generally unaware of the seriousness of a stroke attack and often ignore the importance of time in these medical emergencies. The result of a stroke could be serious paralysis or even death if treatment is not administered within the golden hour — within 60 minutes from the onset of the attack. We urge people to not waste any time in case of a Brain attack, as almost 30,000 brain cells die every second when blood flow to the brain is lost. It is important for people to familiarise themselves with the concept of B-E-F-A-S-T, where they should check the Balance (if there is a sudden loss of balance or coordination), Eyes (if there is blurred or double vision or persistent vision trouble), Face (if one or both sides of the face is drooping), Arms (if the person can raise both arms), Speech (if the person has slurred or garbled speech) and Time (call for immediate medical attention once these signs are noticed). So, in case of a stroke or even doubt of a stroke, ourhotline number should immediately be called which will enable the SRRTto administer the apt treatment on time and help you recover or even reverse the stroke.”

The SRRTis specialised enough to achieve an incredible door-to-needle time of just 11 minutes which keeps the treatment well within the safe 30 minutes timeframe issued as per the International Guidelines.

MGM ENSURES ‘INTACT SURVIVAL’ FOR

EXTREME PRETERM BORN TWIN GIRLS

▪                     Doctors at MGM successfully ensure intact survival, despite survival chances in developed countries being around 50 - 60%

MGM Healthcare, a quaternary care hospital in the heart of the city, today announced the discharge of a unique pair of twins who underwent intensive care at the hospital for 85 days after their birth.

Elaborating on these twins, Dr. Binu Ninan, Head of Department -  Paediatrics and Neonatology, MGM Healthcare said, “The twins came into the world through a caesarean section surgery on recently, in just 25 weeks of pregnancy, which is an extremely premature birth. On account of this, they weighed just 840 grams and 600 grams respectively, the younger one being less than the size of a palm. They spent a challenging time in the neonatal intensive care unit following their birth, as chances of survival of such premature birth even in developed countries is around 50-60%. But we are happy to have successfully brought the babies back to normal.”

The post-birth treatment to achieve normal size and weight for the babies was undertaken by the Neonatology team at MGM Healthcare led by Dr. Binu Ninan, comprising of Dr. Chandra Kumar N., Senior Consultant – Neonatology, Dr. Dakshayani R., Senior Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr Govardhan, Consultants - Paediatrics and Neonatology and Dr. Aravind S., Consultants - Paediatrics and Neonatology.

Neonatologists provided support for breathing in the delivery room and before shifting them to NICU. Both the babies were provided diligent care in NICU in incubators and other support to facilitate growth and maturation of their organs. They required support from ventilator machine for breathing, surfactant therapy (medicine to enable adequate lung expansion), inotropes to support the heart and circulation for first few days, and as they were so tender and could not digest milk, nutrition was provided by intravenous route (parenteral nutrition), Antibiotics were provided for infection, and last but not the least, tender loving care by efficient team of doctors.

Commenting on the babies’ present condition, Dr. Chandra Kumar N. said, “After 85 days of intensive care, the twin girls have now attained weight of 1.65 kg and 1.43 kg respectively, without any major morbidities…this is what we call ‘intact survival’, which is the right of every baby, including preterm babies. Our experience with these pair of twins was very satisfying as we are glad that we could give them back to their parents in a stable condition, just like any normal baby.”

Mother of the twins said, “We are happy we chose MGM Healthcare. While the babies got a new lease of life, the doctors and nurses hand-held us throughout these 85 days, reassuring us continuously that everything would be fine. This care is something that we will cherish all our lives.”
