Quotes from Beneficiaries of ‘Learning with Vodafone Idea Scholarship’ 2020

Kalpana Rajauriya, one of one winners last year said “Students often find books boring and we as teachers have to constantly find new ways to keep them engaged. I always wanted to create content for students myself since it will be more relevant. However, doing it on a mobile phone was always cumbersome. Upon receiving the Vodafone Idea Teachers’ Scholarship, I have now purchased a laptop and recently created my first content and shared it with my students. Especially during the pandemic with the help of the laptop I could easily conduct classes and show my students a variety of content. The scholarship will inspire me to work harder for my students.”

Shmruti Prashant Patro, a student scholarship winner from Maharashtra said, “This year we could not go to the school and suddenly we were told to study from home. Our teacher was taking classes on mobile phones, but my parents could not provide me a phone and I had to borrow it sometimes from neighbours which was causing delay and many times I had to miss my class since the phone was not available. On receiving the Vodafone Idea Students’ Scholarship, one of the first things I purchased was a mobile phone, which I am now using to attend all classes and also use the internet as the teacher tells us. My school fee for the last few month was also pending, which I have paid using the scholarship.

Vodafone Idea’s CSR has transformative programmes in the domain of Education, Agriculture, Women Empowerment and Technology.

Keeping the fun and spirit of campus life alive

Keeping the fun and spirit of campus life alive, the Department of Management Studies (DoMS),National Institute of Technology,Tiruchirappalli, held the Inaugural ceremony of FIRM Games'20 on a virtual platform on 12th September 2020.The week long program is an annual ritual followed by the Department wherein the
students participate in a series of provocative intra-departmental competitions.The prime focus of FIRM Games is to engage the new batch of students and help them integrate with their fellow batch mates and
senior students of DoMS.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Head of the Department in the presence of the department faculty and students. It started off with a brief introduction on FIRM Games followed by the welcome address from
the Head of the Department,Dr.P.Sridevi, who officially declared FIRM Games 2020 open.

Dr.P.Sridevi, highlighted the vitality of the program and stated it as one of the remarkable events in the DoMS calendar, every year. She encouraged the students to dynamically engage and participate in all
the events. She appreciated the second year students for organizing the event via virtual platform by incapacitating all the constraints.

The series of activities in FIRM Games consists of managerial events like Best Manager, B-Plan, Adzap and B-Quiz to test the business acumen of the students and other non-managerial events like JAM,
Content Writing and Flip designed to hone the soft skills of the newcomers and make them more adept, as they step into a new phase of their life at DoMS. A range of informal events like Photography,
Singing, Dancing and Poster creation competitions are also conducted online to enrich the students learning experience.

The juniors and seniors are split into four teams (Falcons, Invincibles, Rudras and Morpheus) where they fight tooth and nail to grab the coveted trophy. Given the current scenario the event is being
hosted online this year, but the geographical limitations do not indicate any shortcoming in the proceedings. The idea of FIRM Games is to inculcate the fact among the students that teamwork is the basis of
management and to equip them with the necessary skills to help them in pave their way in the corporate world. Last year the nail biting competition ended with the Falcons wresting the trophy from three time
champions Morpheus in a close match.Having recently won the honor of being the best non-engineering department of NIT Tiruchirappalli, the holistic environment and engaging atmosphere is what sets it apart
from the other departments.

Teaching and Learning process by NIT through online mode

NIT Trichy has developed a dedicated web portal https://studymaterial.nitt.edu/login.php for uploading the course materials for the benefit of the students. The study materials such as Power Point presentations, lecture notes etc. are uploaded on this portal and students are accessing the study materials using their official email ID credentials from various parts of the country and abroad. Students have also been recommended appropriate online courses in SWAYAM portal for cross references.

Apart from the above arrangements, the faculty members are conducting online lectures through Video Conferencing. Since good broadband connectivity is not available everywhere, recorded online lectures through Video Conferencing are also sent to the students.

Faculty have also used other platforms such as google drive, google classroom, Email and Whatsapp. Students are encouraged to clear their doubts from the faculty concerned through any electronic mode. The students are submitting online assignments which are considered as internal assessments.

As online study modules are not sufficient for laboratory and project work, it is suggested to provide some contact classes after the institute reopnes (a few days depending on the exact date of resumption) with a modified academic calendar, so that the remaining laboratory experiments and project works may be carried out.

The institute is also exploring the possibility of conducting online Exams, if the lockdown period is extended further.

Dr Mini Shaji Thomas,Director, NITT requested all the faculty members to develop innovative methods for teaching learning process adopting electronic mode. This will engage the students and effectively utilize their time for learning the subjects during this lockdown period.  The Institute is also augmenting the facilities for conducting online classes, she added.
