SICVETian’s Celebrate their 40th Anniversary

SICVETian’s Celebrate their 40th Anniversary at NIT Trichy

National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the batch of 1980 of State Institute of Co-operative Vocational Education and Training (SICVET) on 25th January 2020.  The programme offered at REC-Trichy functioned for three courses and admitted students for three and a half years. The courses offered were Diploma in Architecture and Interior Design, Diploma in Electrical Appliances and Systems, and Diploma in Textiles and Fashion Design.

This course was modelled to intersperse academic education with relevant industry experience and resulted in each student to be seamlessly absorbed into their respective industries upon graduation.  These courses were offered over three years, starting in 1975 and was discontinued in the year 1980.
The event was inaugurated by Director, Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, in the presence of Dr. Raman Sankaranarayan, Dean Institute Development and Alumni Relations, Mr. Krishna Sai, President of RECAL; Professor Shanmugam, Faculty of SICVET, Mr. Senthilnathan (batch of '80) Managing Director of Thangavelu Textile Mills and Mr. Balakrishnan (batch of '80), President of SICVET Alumni Association.  Each of the dignitaries spoke during the occasion.  A moment of silence was observed for the beloved souls are not with us anymore, including Professor Jacob and Professor Manisundaram, both of whom were the masterminds behind the SICVET program.

Professor Shanmugam delivered his heartfelt address to the 74 students that he taught and guided with great affection and care. He compared SICVET to a gurukulam and credited the human-touch of the course as a reason for its success in shaping these individuals. He ended his speech by crediting the SICVET alumni for providing employment to several people.

Dr. Raman Sankaranarayan welcomed the group to the campus and appreciated the enthusiasm of the SICVETians.  He commended the program for its rigorous training that SICVET students have gone through, that has shaped them into well-rounded individuals. He humbly requested the SICVETians to interact with the current students of NITT, and support them through any means possible.

The Director, Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas delivered her Directorial address, welcoming the SICVET Alumni to the campus. She compared the presence of the SICVET Alumni to the biblical story of the returning of the prodigal son. She expressed immense delight in being able to welcome the alumni and spoke about the initiatives being taken to raise NITT to greater heights.

The programme ended with a small video felicitating the departed souls and a small presentation of the syllabus that was conceptualized during those days, paving a way to new avenues.
