Directed by Goutam Ghose, the short film travels back and forth in time to portray how a couple in Kolkata navigates their relationship amidst the new normal

Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films released its latest short film titled ‘Somoyer Smritimala’ (Memories of Time) today. Directed by Goutam Ghose, the 35-minute film captures the sense of uncertainty and discomfort brought on by the lockdown, through the perspective of a couple living in the heart of Kolkata – Kabir Basu (played by Suman Mukhopadhyay), a writer in his late 40s, and his wife Sumita (played by Gargee Roy Chowdhury), a teacher.

‘Somoyer Smritimala’ is a poignant film set during the initial phase of the pandemic’; ‘25^th March 2020 – Nationwide Lockdown’, says a frame early in the film. The film begins with Kabir and Sumita’s quest for fresh air and sanity as they set out on a road trip to the countryside. Through the course of their journey, the film travels back and forth in time, capturing the challenges brought on by the pandemic. From virtual classrooms and eerie hospitals to mental health concerns and the woes of migrant workers, the short film throws light on the unprecedented consequences of the Covid-19 outbreak in a nuanced manner.

Speaking about the short film, filmmaker Goutam Ghose said, “It is virtually impossible to capture the emotions experienced during the pandemic in 35 minutes. Somoyer Smritimala is an attempt to portray, through the lens of a couple living in Kolkata, how the world around us changed during the pandemic. It explores how the pandemic impacted relationships and the human psyche in mysterious ways. I think the film will strongly resonate with the audience of Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films.”

Gyaananda school Sector 109, Dwarka Expressway, Gurugram organized the Howzzat Cricket Tournament 2023 grand finale on Sunday, April 30, 2023, to uplift the spirit of sportspersonship in the lives of their students, parents and community. According to a recent UNICEF Report[1], around 818 million children in the world lack basic handwashing facilities at their schools, which puts them at increased risk of COVID-19 and other transmittable diseases. Furthering its global mission to improve handwashing behaviour especially amongst children, Hindustan Unilever Limited’s number one hygiene soap brand, Lifebuoy kicked-off the largest virtual hygiene drive in the Metaverse - Gift of the Ganga.

This unique Minecraft build aims to turn germ-breeding pollution into germ-protection, thereby turning pollution that is bad into germ protection that is good. On ‘Gift of the Ganga’, gamers are invited to fish out plastic pollution from the mighty river recreated in the metaverse. In exchange, Lifebuoy will clear an equivalent and more amount from the actual river.

On-ground, in partnership with Swayambhu, a social enterprise and Central Government’s Namami Gange Programme, Lifebuoy will roll out plastic waste collection and upcycling efforts in one of the most afflicted parts of the river – the Haridwar bend. The plastic collected will be supplemented by a segregation process of identifying, classifying, dividing, and sorting so that it can then be sent onward for upcycling. To drive awareness and action, Lifebuoy also encourages physical participation from people from all walks of life to participate in the actual clean-up drive on-ground to volunteer. In a rare case, experts at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital remotely managed an 80-year-old man who suffered a heart attack and two episodes of cardiac arrest while being transported in an ambulance en-route to Delhi through tele-management. Initially, he was taken to a local hospital in his native city, Varanasi, where preliminary examination revealed that his heart was operating at only 20% efficiency with severe valve leakage. He was in cardiogenic shock and had to be ventilated. The doctors there gave up hope and in desperation while his health was deteriorating, his family consulted Dr NN Khanna, Senior Consultant, Cardiology & Vascular Intervention ,Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, who recommended immediate interventional treatment for which the patient had to be transported as soon as possible to Delhi. Considering delay in transportation by air ambulance due to heavy fog ,doctors decided to remotely manage the patient via tele medical guidance for 14 hours, while enroute to Delhi. After reaching the hospital he was immediately put on left ventricular support (device that helps pump blood in failing heart condition ). This was followed by a complex multi-vessel coronary angioplasty procedure with an aim to pull him out of the cardiogenic shock, fix severe leaking of mitral valve and manage pulmonary edema (Fluid accumulation in lungs because of heart failure).

Dr NN Khanna, Senior Consultant, Cardiology & Vascular Interventions, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, said, “When the patient's son contacted us from Ireland and explained to us the medical condition of the patient and the doctors in Varanasi had given him absolutely no hope, we immediately took the decision to take the chance and recommended to bring him to Delhi. However, due to unfavourable weather condition, we had to resort to the utilisation of Telemedicine to monitor and manage the patient throughout the 14-hour long road journey from Varanasi to New Delhi. Telemedicine to monitor has been an extremely vital tool in extending support to save numerous lives, allowing us to remotely diagnose and treat patients and improving access to care. The patient had a history of multiple episodes of cardiac arrests with only 20% functioning of the heart. However, post 2-hour long cath procedure for placement of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and left ventricular support device during complex multi vessel angioplasty ,the patient was discharged and travelled back safely to Varanasi.”

Relative of the patient said "We cannot express enough gratitude towards Dr. Khanna and the entire team at Apollo Hospitals for their unwavering commitment and persistence in saving our father's life. Despite facing multiple challenges, including severe heart attacks, cardiogenic shock, and difficulties in transfer, Dr. Khanna's expertise and continued care through telemedicine and complex angioplasty played a crucial role in stabilizing our father's condition.”

The patient recovered and is visiting the hospital for check-ups.

I was a little away from the film industry for a while, and I have now continued to act in many movies. Cinema is my profession.

I believe this current generation must know about me. There are a few allegations stating that I didn’t take part in the Ponniyin Selvan promotions. I was invited, but couldn’t be a part of it as I was out of Chennai during that time. I am so happy to get such a prominent role from Mani Ratnam. I am glad to see that the film is getting celebrated by everyone. I thank both Mani Ratnam and Lyca Productions Subaskaran for giving me this opportunity to me. Thanks to actor Vijay and director Vamsi for making me popular among the current generation of audiences with Varisu. I was initially negligent to play the negative role in Rudhran but realized that audiences aren’t the same in perceiving the antagonist as it was before. They have become more rational in observing how the role is performed. This encouraged me to perform this character. I will not act in villain charecters that get bashed and have no scope to perform. I have started doing more movies than before when I used to act in hero characters. I have been simultaneously acting in web series and movies. Many have been asking about my political domain, and I will individually meet the press to reveal some interesting facts, and I would like to mention that a mass announcement will be made in 2026. I have always enjoyed the privilege of having your support."
